The non-citizens in the NZYQ group cannot be returned to their country of origin. But sending them to Nauru just pushes the issue onto a poorer country. @maryannekenny@Lisa_vanToor@MurdochUni https://t.co/LzHYeKImEF
@maryannekenny and I have written a commentary unpacking the Australian government's new deal to send over 350 non-citizens from the NZYQ cohort to Nauru and the proposed laws to remove the requirement for procedural fairness of these decisions.

Australia is deporting 3 non-citizens from the ‘NZYQ’ group to Nauru. What could it do instead?

#ASF17 handed down today, here are a few thoughts: there were two judgments, one by 6 judges, and one by Edelman alone. They all agreed that ASF17's claim to be released from immigration detention should be dismissed, but Edelman J's reasons were very nuanced
This is causing significant harm to an already grieving community. As @DavidShoebridge said: “It is beyond cruel to deny people fleeing the onslaught in Gaza the possibility of safety because they might be unable to return to their homes.” https://t.co/27o7kPg9ys
The ICJ has yet to fully examine the merits of the South Africa v Israel case but has recognised the plausibility that Israel has committed acts of genocide in Gaza. The Court has recommended several provisional measures that have not been acted upon (and openly violated) by Israel and influential members of the international community.
I did investigate the merits and my conclusion is that Israel has committed acts of genocide in Gaza, and tried to justify its genocidal logic as IHL compliant.

Thank you @ZakiHaidariAU for a very moving talk to students studying refugee law @MurdochUni human rights program. He gave a moving first hand of #refugee experience and about the work of @amnestyOz on refugees and what we can all do to uphold refugee rights
The new migration bill passed by the UK Parliament violates the country’s international human rights and refugee law obligations.
High Commissioner for Human Rights @volker_turk and I share grave concerns in this respect.
Here is our joint statement👇🏻

human rights activist @Abdulaziz_Ada today about his #refugee journey from Sudan to Australia, Manus, PNG. Now resident in Switzerland.
The announcement for permanency includes $9.4 million for legal centres to provide advice and assistance to people on TPVs & SHEVs. Thank you @andrewjgiles for recognising the important role of CLCs, lawyers and migration agents to work together with refugees to end limbo
A moral and financial black hole.
“At the current rate – based on 65 people – it is costing Australian taxpayers more than $2.1m each year to hold a single person on the island.”
