Everyone is demanding educational reforms.
Excellent idea.
But can we begin by reforming the media first?
Today, our biggest influencers are not our teachers but TV studios, WhatsApp forwards, YouTube channels and social media trollers. Some of them teach us to hate before we understand, react before we think, and choose narratives over truth.
Whether we call ourselves andhbhakts or wear any other political label, we've all been conditioned to become more partisan and more narrow-minded.
Forget educational reform. Reform the media first. A nation that is fed propaganda every day cannot be educated. It can only be conditioned.

इस्तीफ़ों से जुड़ा यथार्थ

इस्तीफ़ा एक गुणकारी पदार्थ है। इसका उपयोग विभिन्न परिस्थितियों में किया जाता है। वह कई प्रकार की कार्यसिद्धियों हेतु प्रयोग में लाया जाता है।

एक ओर जहाँ किसी को संकट में डालने के लिए यह प्रयुक्त होता है तो वहीं दूसरी ओर संकट से उबारने के क्रम में भी इसका जम कर इस्तेमाल होता है।

यह किसी भी मौसम में और कभी भी दिया जा सकता है और लिया जा सकता है। लेकिन आमतौर पर सत्ताधारी दल की हर छोटी-बड़ी भूलों-ग़लतियों पर चिल्ला-चिल्ला कर इस्तीफ़ा मांगने का अपना औचित्य होता है। इसी प्रकार चुनाव के ठीक पूर्व इस्तीफ़ा देने के पीछे अपना तर्क और तिकड़म होता है।

इस उपभोक्तावादी युग में इस्तीफ़ा भी एक उत्पाद है जिसका अपना एक बाज़ार है। यह बाज़ार आजकल काफ़ी गर्म है। या यूँ कह सकते हैं कि चुनाव का लोहा गर्म है और इस्तीफ़ा उस पर चोट है। धड़ाधड़ इस्तीफ़े दिए जा रहे हैं।

मज़े की बात है कि अभी इसकी विशेष माँग भी नहीं है। माँग से अधिक आपूर्ति है। सो इस्तीफों का भाव काफी गिर गया लगता है। जिसे देखो उसी के पास इस्तीफ़ा है। जो नहीं दे रहे या जिनको देने की अभी जरूरत नहीं है, आशा है वे भी जल्द ही इस्तीफ़ा देने की स्थिति में आ जाएंगे। और जिन्होंने हवाला के सहारे इस स्थिति को प्राप्त कर लिया है, वे न चाहते हुए भी देने को तत्पर हैं। भईया, यही तो समर्पण है। लोकतांत्रिक आस्था है। जब कोई उपाय नहीं है तब इस्तीफ़ा है।

वैसे इस्तीफ़ा देना कोई हँसी खेल नहीं है। बहुत लोग चाहते हुए भी नहीं दे पाते हैं। उन्हें हाई कमान की इजाज़त नहीं मिलती।

कुछ तो इस्तीफ़ा देने के पूर्व धैर्यपूर्वक प्रतीक्षा करते हैं। शायद कोई रास्ता निकल आए। अगर ऐसा नहीं होता है तब कितने बोझिल और खिसियाए (खीजे) मूड में वह इस्तीफ़ा तैयार करता है यह राम जाने।

उसके बाद भी यह कितनी बड़ी विडंबना है कि किसी का इस्तीफ़ा मंजूर नहीं होता और किसी को इस्तीफ़ा के लिए मजबूर किया जाता है। कोई इसे चुनौती के रूप में स्वीकारता है तो किसी के लिए यह त्रासदीपूर्ण है।

इस्तीफ़ों का अपना इतिहास रहा है। विभिन्न दौरों और मोड़ों से गुजरता यह आज हवाला तक जा पहुँचा है। किसी के लिए अंतिम उपाय है तो किसी के लिए प्रथम प्रतिक्रिया बन गया है। अपने दुष्कर्मों को छिपाने और जनता को विश्वास दिलाने का साधन बन गया है।

अगर आप पर झूठा लांछन लगाया गया है तो आप पद बने रहते हुए ही ठोस साक्ष्यों, तर्कों द्वारा अपनी निर्दोषता साबित करने का प्रयास कर सकते हैं। लेकिन नहीं।

विपत्ति के समय पलायनवादी मन अपेक्षाकृत शॉर्टकट रास्ते से अपना संदेश देना चाहता है। चुनाव सिर पर है। ख़ुद को 'स्वच्छ' साबित करना है। इस्तीफ़ा दे दो। जनता यही कहेगी कि देखो भाई, बेचारे पर आरोप लगा नहीं कि उसने पद छोड़ दिया। कितना नैतिक आदमी है।

कोई-कोई तो पूरा का पूरा सूटकेस डकार जाता है। फिर भी पद नहीं छोड़ता। पद छोड़ना तो दूर ऊपरी मन से ही सही -यह भरोसा भी ज़ाहिर नहीं करता कि 'आरोप साबित हो तो मैं इस्तीफ़ा दे दूँगा।' कितना घाघ है। और उसे देखो। इस्तीफ़ा लिए तैयार बैठा था। अपने ऊपर लगे आरोपों के प्रति कितना संवेदनशील है।

और हो भी क्यों न। उसे पता है कि यदि आज उसने इस्तीफ़ा न दिया और पद पर बैठा रहा है तो रोज़ उसकी ख़बर ली जाएगी। अख़बार वाले लताड़ेंगे। पक्षी-विपक्षी इसे 'दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण' करार देंगे। जनता में जगहंसाई होगी। इसलिए इस्तीफ़ा ही एकमात्र विकल्प है। दे दो।

उसके बाद कैसे उठोगे- कैसे बैठोगे यह कोई देखने वाला नहीं होगा। सार्वजनिक परिदृश्य से बाहर हो जाओगे। उसके बाद लोग तुम्हें भूलने के साथ-साथ तुम पर लगे आरोपों को भी भूल जाएंगे। तब तक अपनी भावी रणनीति तय करते रहो। भारतीय व्यवस्था में तो घोटालों के अवसर आते ही रहते हैं। उसमें तुम जैसा ही कोई दूसरा शामिल होगा। बस इसी समय शेर की तरह दहाड़ उठना -'तुमने भी पैसा खाया, तुमने भी पैसा खाया।' उसके बाद उससे इस्तीफ़ा मांग लेना।

राष्ट्रीय परिदृश्य पर तुम फिर से उभर जाओगे। इलेक्शन जीत जाओगे। अपनी नई दुकान सजा लोगे। इसलिए हे वत्स, अभी तुम इस्तीफ़ा दे दो।

The resignation of the Education Minister is an acknowledgment that accountability in a democracy cannot be indefinitely evaded. It comes after weeks of determined, peaceful voices raised by students, parents and citizens across the country who refused to be ignored.

It also comes after far too many young Indians faced unnecessary police brutality and force for exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest. That should concern every citizen, regardless of political affiliation.

But accountability does not end with a resignation. The deeper failures that brought us here must now be addressed through transparent reforms, institutional responsibility and a commitment to ensuring that no young Indian’s future is jeopardised again.

The students who marched, spoke out and peacefully persisted deserve to know that this is the beginning of reform, not the end of the story.

At both Safdarjung and now Medanta, police are everywhere. At the main gate. The reception. The lifts. Outside @Wangchuk66’s ICU. They decide who may or may not meet him.
If the Court has clarified that he is not under detention, then under what authority is this happening?
In an enlightened democracy, is the role of the police to protect citizens and uphold the law, or to control citizens on behalf of those in power?
These are questions every Indian should be asking.

It is painful to see young students from different parts of the country assembled for days on the streets of New Delhi. Their anxieties and concerns regarding the examination system are genuine and must be handled with empathy and a desire to find a lasting solution. I fervently hope that this is not treated merely as a law-and-order issue to be tackled through the use of force. It is very painful to see that even young girls were brutally mishandled.
Such use of force shall alienate large sections of Indian society from the national goal of Viksit Bharat.

Before you rush to criticise @Wangchuk66, first pause to earn the ethos of fasting for 26 days for a cause larger than yourself.
He lies in the ICU today, having lost 11 kg, including muscle mass, because he chose sacrifice over comfort. The least we can offer him is a day of compassion before burdening him with our own expectations and political calculations.
Not everyone is qualified to judge a life of selfless service. One must first earn the moral stature to do so.
