The Return
I haven't posted here in over a year.
I used to think about X constantly. I'd read books and watch videos partly because I was wondering what I could turn into a post. I'd study people I admired until eventually I started sounding like them. At some point I wasn't sure whether I actually wanted the life I was working toward or whether I'd just spent enough time online that I thought I did.
So I stopped.
The weird thing is, I didn't replace it with anything impressive. I worked at the restaurant. Played a lot of golf. Spent time with people I care about. Got more serious about my faith. Made some mistakes. Read things because I wanted to read them. Started enjoying ordinary life again.
I think I needed to forget about personal brand for a while to remember what my actual personality was.
And now I want to write again. I still want to build something. I still want more out of my life. I just don't want to pretend I know exactly what that looks like anymore.
So I don't really have a content strategy this time. I'm going to try things, build things, and write about what happens. I'm calling the whole thing The Honest Attempt.
That's about it.
Video games have gotten unbelievably good and somehow I’m increasingly interested in sitting around a table moving little pieces of cardboard with my friends.
I made a cold call this week to a local plumbing company.
I almost didn’t because I didn’t have some perfect pitch or polished offer.
I just called, told them what I noticed, and asked who handled their website.
Ended up finding out the owner handles it, got my info passed along, and also noticed their Google Maps number was wrong.
Nothing huge happened.
But it reminded me that doing the thing gives you way more information than sitting there trying to plan the perfect way to do it.
I think I need more of that. Less rehearsing, more reps.
@sheshn94 The more you believe in your opinion the better!
It's easy to talk shit and not take it personal if it's something you don't care about.
The real difficulty is learning how to speak your mind about something you defend and not take the backlash personally.
@the_erik_doran I believe having faith and putting in the effort to grow that faith brings MORE of those obstacles like you said as a means to making you grow.
I think we've gotten really good at consuming things without ever putting them anywhere.
We finish a book and start another. Watch a video and scroll to the next one. Go on a trip, come home, and immediately return to normal life.
Take, take, take.
I've been thinking about this because I don't want to live like that anymore.
When something ends, I want to actually close the loop. Appreciate that it happened. Think about what I experienced. Figure out if anything changed in me because of it.
I've started asking myself a simple question:
What am I taking with me?
Sometimes it'll be a lesson. Sometimes a memory. Sometimes I'll realize I disagree with something. And sometimes the answer might just be that I had a really good time.
But at least I didn't consume it and immediately reach for the next thing.
@SpeechWrx I remember seeing it's all about someone who suffers excessive self awareness to the point of inaction, and that sounds pretty similar to me.

@AlexHormozi You'll have plenty of these moments of realization, but there will be a time where it becomes less and less.
And then you will know you're doing what you're supposed to be doing.
