#OnThisDay, we pay homage to the El Cortez Hotel & Casino, an enduring symbol of classic Las Vegas now celebrating 84 years on Fremont Street.
When it opened in 1941, casino men John C. Grayson and Marion Hicks, fresh off California’s anti-gambling crackdowns, brought their gaming know-how to a quiet desert town searching for its future. Partnering with J.K. Houssels, one of the first in Las Vegas to obtain a casino license, they built and operated the El Cortez, one of the first modern hotel-casinos in the area.
In 1945, the property was purchased by Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum, who saw potential in Nevada’s legal gambling industry. Their investment connected the El Cortez to both organized crime history and the development of modern Las Vegas.
The El Cortez helped define the early Las Vegas skyline and set the stage for the resort city it would become. More than eight decades later, it still stands as a tribute to the ambition and ingenuity that built this town.

The @4QueensLV just took “classic comfort” to the next level. 💎✨
After a $24 million renovation, the property’s North Tower is officially open! 💖🥂
It features updated rooms and suites with modern amenities, enlarged bathrooms, new furnishings, and sound-dampening windows that keep the energy of Fremont Street just the right distance away. 🌟
The upgrades combine the charm of vintage Las Vegas with the convenience and comfort today’s guests expect.
@AsFanByDesign While you're tossing off to pronohub I'll be taking my family to A's games at the new stadium for the next 50 years.
