Last night SABC News aired the MMSEZ debate: big promises on one side, and Living Limpopo’s warning against a coal-fed sacrifice zone on the other.
So, your verdict: industrial megatropolis built on coal and steel — or industrial-scale disaster hiding behind a smooth sales pitch?
The harms are already here: contaminated water, carcinogenic air risks, pollution dumping framed as a project “benefit”, meagre jobs, and ongoing violations of environmental and constitutional law.
📅 22 Apr 2026 — Chinese coal producer Kinetic Development Group completes a US$90m takeover of MC Mining. One Chinese-controlled entity now holds strip-mining rights over 106,581 ha and ±8.3 billion tons of coal feeding the MMSEZ.
📅 22 Mar 2026 — International Rights of Nature Tribunal condemns MMSEZ as a sacrifice zone and warns of environmental racism.
📅 27 Mar — Minister gazettes 3m ha MMSEZ SDF land use plan.
LIMPOPO IS NOT A CHEAP COAL PIT AND WASTE DUMP FOR CHINA
In SOPA 2025 Premier Ramathuba promised the tribunal on land-use rights for the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone would sit “tomorrow.”
A year later, SOPA 2026 — still no hearing, same empty promise.
Hold a fair hearing.

Thanks to ALL RISE - Attorneys for Climate and Environmental Justice we are honoured to be featured at this year's Environmental Law Association Annual Conference, 8-10 Oct, hosted by UNIVEN in Limpopo, under the theme of The Environment and Justifiable Limits on Development:
MC Mining that hasn’t turned a profit in 10 years is now turning our land and water into massive losses on South Africa’s Natural Capital Accounts: it is illegally laying waste to the Vhembe too - while our government refuses to hold them to account.

Huge credit to Tony Carnie and Daily Maverick for blowing the lid off the MMSEZ ferrochrome smelter scam, and exposing the fatal flaws in the environmental approvals process.
