Both of us left profoundly moved by the experience. Not Jewish, but would agree that we were probably the exception.

The world watched the aftermath of October 7 with its own eyes. Survivors, first responders, forensic experts, journalists, and independent investigations documented horrific acts of sexual violence committed by Hamas terrorists.
To hide behind technicalities such as "no independent investigation has conclusively verified every individual rape allegation" while simultaneously acknowledging evidence of widespread sexual violence is not a pursuit of truth—it is an exercise in moral evasion.
No one demanded this level of impossible evidentiary perfection for victims of other atrocities. When hundreds were murdered, mutilated, kidnapped, and subjected to sexual violence, the burden should not fall on traumatized victims and devastated families to satisfy political narratives.
The real tragedy is that instead of standing unequivocally with victims, some international actors appear more concerned with creating doubt than with seeking justice.
History will remember October 7 for what it was: one of the most brutal terrorist massacres of the modern era. Attempts to minimize, relativize, or obscure the crimes committed that day do not serve human rights—they undermine them.

Puberty Blockers and (Gender) Distress Relief

Even if we assume the strongest possible claim made by proponents of gender affirmative care, that puberty blockers reduce gender related distress in some children, this does not justify their use, nor does it validate the concept of an innate, mismatched gender identity.

Short term distress relief is fully explained by well established child development mechanisms:
- Stress removal: Puberty is intrinsically stressful. Blocking it predictably reduces anxiety without addressing underlying causes.
- Cognitive concreteness (Piaget): Children experience relief from a tangible action (“my body is stopped”), regardless of whether the belief motivating it is accurate.
- Social reinforcement (Bandura): Affirmation, praise, peer belonging, and adult approval reliably reduce distress.
- Meaning and scaffolding (Vygotsky): Distress decreases when uncertainty is replaced by a culturally sanctioned explanatory narrative endorsed by authority figures.
- Avoidance (Winnicott): Suppressing bodily development reduces immediate discomfort but risks entrenching a False Self organised around avoidance rather than integration.

Crucially, symptom relief is not the same as benefit. Puberty blockers carry substantial developmental costs even in best-case scenarios:
- They interrupt normal psychosexual development (Erikson).
- They foreclose exploration and promote identity foreclosure (Marcia).
- They bypass natural desistance pathways (60 - 90% without intervention).
- They require decisions beyond a child’s cognitive capacity for informed consent.
- They place children on a predictable pathway to further medicalisation.

In paediatric medicine, an intervention must not only reduce distress but also preserve development, protect future autonomy, and avoid irreversible harm. Puberty blockers fail these criteria.

Feeling better does not mean something true has been discovered. Children can experience genuine relief from interventions that reinforce avoidance, provide meaning, or reduce stress, without those interventions being developmentally appropriate, ethical, or necessary.

The ethical response to childhood gender distress is not to halt development, but to support it.
