We are very sorry to learn of the death of Dame Jinty Nelson (1942-2024).
As well as being a superb historian of the early medieval world, Jinty was the first female President of @RoyalHistSoc (2001-05), having been elected a Fellow in 1979. Her portrait hangs in our office 1/2
When we repeat these legends unfiltered, we often perpetuate all of the prejudices of the era in which the crime occurred - victim blaming, misogyny, classicism, racism, antisemitism. Crimes become fables, murderers supernatural monsters, and victims become irrelevant.
So, it’s spooky season again, which means it’s time to sell “Murdertainment” to the masses.
In most cases historic true crime has jumped straight from the 19th century headlines into legend. Rarely do we stop to ask if these stories are entirely true or what they are saying.
@melindahaunton Evening all. At friends in the Midlands so just a cup of tea whilst watching a movie with the odd-child. Been a busy but lovely week at conference.

All fired up about #CarbonLiteracyTraining at #ARA2024. So important and relevant for all. Also good to acknowledge the invaluable contribution that the late @mentionthewar made in exploring how this plays out in a digital context. @ARAUK_IE@ARAconf
Delightful evening at #ARA2024 culminating in greatly deserved lifetime award to @Postcard_Jim, who has done a lot and modelled a lot of great behaviours as he did. Hurrah!
Have had a fantastic few days at #ARA2024. So many excellent and exciting ideas to steal and lovely to see some old friends and meet new people. Now enjoying my last morning in Brum - the hotel is a lot quieter without several hundred archivists!
