The way you write your SQL query is totally different from the way SQL runs it. Knowing and understanding this difference will help you to write accurate queries, avoid errors and debug errors easily.
Before I got into data analytics, I came across countless roadmaps online. Some said start with Excel. Others said jump straight into SQL. A few bold ones even said begin with Power BI🤣. But the most common recommendation by far was Excel.
So I went with Excel even though I didn't know the reasoning behind it but because so many people pointed there, I assumed it was the easiest entry point.
Even after I finished learning Excel, I still couldn't tell you why it was the right place to start.
That answer didn't come until I began learning SQL.
SQL didn't just teach me querying, it also taught me Excel. I was literarylly doing the same things in SQL that I had done in Excel, just with different syntax. And because Excel had already wired my brain to think about data in a structured way, I was able to understand some of the SQL topics faster.
That's when it finally made sense to me that Excel isn't just a tool you start with, it's the foundation for your learning. It teaches you how to think about data before you ever write a line of code or build a dashboard. Every other tool builds on that foundation.
So if you're standing at the beginning of your data analytics journey, staring at ten different opinions and wondering where to start, here's my answer, not as someone who read it in a blog post, but as someone actively in the thick of it:
Start with Excel...

While I'm trying to finish up SQL, I'm also trying to make sure I'm active In the Upskill classes by @genesystechhub and also completing my task.
So far, I've been enjoying the classes and I'm able to refresh my brain on excel and also learn new things as well.
Here is the task for week 3
It has been a be a busy day...
Good morning #datafam
It's been a while I updated you guys on my SQL progress, pardon my bad character ☺️
In the last few weeks, I decided to lock-in and finish up my SQL roadmap cause school will be resuming anytime soon, and I will be engaged with a lot of school activities that might affect my SQL Tutorial. I didn't want the delay that happened during the Excel phase to repeat itself.
This was one of the reasons why I've not been active here.
So far I've been able to finish up 48+ advanced SQL topics 💃😁and now I'm working on an E-Commerce practice project.
Now I said practice project cause I've not worked on a full dataset analysis but I always practice on each of the topics I learn. I don't know if that makes sense...🤷♀️🤭
Anyways, details of the E-commerce practice project will be coming up soon.
Anticipate... I guess😁
Earlier this morning, I started learning Aggregation & Grouping in SQL.
while I was practicing one of the aggregate functions(AVG), I decided to check the average for February alone but it returned NULL.
At first I ignored it but after checking for March, I got a result and that drew my attention back to the February average. If I can get a result for March, February shouldn't be Null.
After checking my table and found February but got NULL as result, I examined my query for a while, and I discovered I made a mistake in the capitalization. so instead of 'February', I wrote 'february' and SQL couldn't find that in my table that's why it returned NULL.
Honestly at this point, I think I prefer "error" than this. At least "error" will let you know there's an issue somewhere in your query.
Abeg, let me go and sleep first 🚶♀️🏃♀️
You know... Learning SQL has started making me think about how everything in life is really just filtered, sorted, and grouped information.
You're only shown what you want to see or what they want you to see.
My brain might be broken now fr😞.
I get right...
But you can still build in public without having to neglect learning.
I'm currently writing my final year first semester exams while learning data analytics and also learning/building in public.
So here's what I do that you can also do.
• I always plan and schedule my post with @buffer. Because I use the free subscription, I can only schedule 10 posts at once. So I schedule my posts at night. So even if I'm not online or I'm learning I can still be posting tweets without having to be online.
• I engage with mutuals post in the morning for like 30 minutes. Then in about an hour later again I check for possible notification and reply to comments.
And repeat the same process everyday.
That way you don't have to neglect learning or constantly being online.
Dear beginner Data Analyst,
Data analysis isn't about finding what you expected. It's about being genuinely curious about what you'll find. The moment you expect a specific answer, you've stopped analyzing.
I already knew that Nigerians will make use of this 2026 tax reform to exploit people.
Landlords are increasing students rent by 100%
Business owners are charging for vat.
School fees are increasing.
Government go still collect their own oo
But the income is not increasing.
You see those people that are always pouring from your cup but can never pour into your cup, run away from them.
Cause they will never stop until dey see you empty.
