Ayatollah Khamenei was more willing to die than to compromise. Days after his killing, no one in the regime currently has the legitimacy, authority, or the will to reverse a 47-year culture of resistance. At the moment the regime appears more prepared to break than to bend.
Khamenei can be despised and mourned simultaneously. Few will miss him, but now the system (should it survive) can move on untethered without him. He held back reform and reformists since 2000, moderation internally, and accommodation with the West. His second revolution,, launched in 2019, failed to restore legitimacy. He died as a martyr in a resistance war with the US and Israel, which, by my view, was the only face-saving way to go out.

For the second time in three days, Putin addressed the Russian people to condemn an "armed rebellion." In this second iteration, he came across as much angrier. Yet, in the end, he simply repeated that Wagner can leave for Belarus.
Many in Washington say they see the decision to cut 2 million BPD as an act of aggression against the West. So is OPEC+ using energy as a weapon? CNBC's @_HadleyGamble asks Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister to respond.
