“You don’t see this in Ireland… you see this in America.”
Vigils were held across Ireland after Yves Sakila, a 35-year-old Congolese man, died after being detained by Irish security staff. Many protesters drew parallels to the police murder of George Floyd.
This is Khalifa from Gaza, he came to Ireland twice, played football, met the President, charmed us all. He was a Palestine National Youth Team player. He was 20 when he was murdered by Israel, one of the 421 football players they killed. He is why the FAI must not play Israel.
INAR Director Shane O'Curry said: "Nobody deserves to die for being suspected of shoplifting. "Something clearly went terribly wrong. We are very concerned that this case appears to have the hallmarks of a case of excessive use of force".

"Deeply disturbing on so many levels. Of course, an investigation into Yves’s death is needed, but the Congolese and African communities in Ireland must also be reassured that their rights and lives matter equally." Stephen Bowen, Executive Director, Amnesty International Ireland
The vicious racism in much of the discussion about what was done to Yves Sakila is so disgusting. The racist callousness with which a person's life is dismissed is something we really have to reckon with. It enables the very worst.
Just attended the vigil for Yves Sakila's death.
To see the dignity of the poor mourners is quite something. “No more violence” they chant.
To the Irish racists who have taken glee at this awful tragedy, you’re the absolute shame of Ireland.
Two gunmen targeted the Islamic Center of San Diego, California, killing at least 3 people, including a security guard.
The incident comes as Islamophobia has reached a record high in the U.S.
A Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) report reveals that in 2024, CAIR’s offices in California received the highest number of anti-Muslim discrimination complaints in the country.
The video of what happened to Yves Sakila is shocking. Those responsible for the excessive force must be held to account. And politicians have to understand that negative comments about Africans create an environment where this is more likely to happen.
