Every July 16th, the Spanish coast does something extraordinary 🌊

It's Día de la Virgen del Carmen, the day fishing communities up and down the coast honour the patron saint of sailors and the sea. Her statue is carried through the streets, then taken out onto the water aboard a flower-covered boat, followed by a flotilla of fishing vessels, with crowds gathered on the shore to watch.

The tradition dates back centuries, rooted in the belief that the Virgin protects all those who sail and work on the water. As dusk falls, fireworks light up the bay and the music starts - equal parts religious devotion and full-blown celebration, in true Spanish style.

If you've never seen it, it's worth catching at least once!
