Corpsmembers from Urban Corps of San Diego County's Construction/Green Build team recently replaced the fencing at the San Diego River Mouth β protecting one of the city's most biodiverse coastal habitats from Ocean Beach's Dog Beach next door. π¦πΏ
Working in partnership with San Diego Bird Alliance, San Diego River Foundation, and the City of San Diego, Corpsmembers dug and placed 300 fence poles two feet into the sand, each reinforced with rebar, then strung rope and four rows of twisted wire with wooden slats to complete the fence.
Why does it matter? The San Diego River Mouth is home to rare coastal dune and tidal wetland habitat β and over 275 species of birds.
"The fences we partnered with Urban Corps help us share, protect and enjoy the habitat and other species that use this area." β Andrew Meyer, Director of Conservation, San Diego Bird Alliance

Urban Corps of San Diego County is doing great work as the administrator of the Back 2 Work Program!
Through an innovative partnership between the Butte County Office of Education (BCOE) and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Urban Corps Corpsmembers work alongside Caltrans crews on litter and debris removal, weed and vegetation control, and highway beautification projects across the county.
The Back 2 Work Program helps participants close employment gaps, overcome barriers, and transition back into the workforce. It operates in 27 counties statewide, and Urban Corps of San Diego County is proud to lead it locally.
This is exactly what local corps do best: connecting young people with meaningful work while delivering real environmental and community benefit. πͺπ

Meet Malaki E. Hayes; his story will stop you in your tracks. π
Malaki faced serious setbacks early in life, including time in prison. When he was released, he came to San Diego, determined to finish school and build something new. His sister suggested Urban Corps of San Diego County. He hesitated, then signed up anyway.
In August 2024, Malaki became a Corpsmember. He joined our Community Improvement Services team, earned his driver's license, and got to work. In June 2025, he walked across the stage and earned his high school diploma. π
"Getting my diploma meant a lot to me. I always thought I was a failure. This accomplishment was the start of opening a new door for me."
Today, Malaki works in construction during the day and attends Summit College's plumbing program at night. He's on track to finish in spring 2026. πͺ
"Urban Corps took care of me. It felt like family and a place you can call home."
That's what this is all about. οΏ½οΏ½πΏ

Meet Nicole Flores, Urban Corps of San Diego County's Corpsmember of the Year! π
Nicole joined Urban Corps in 2023 after a friend told her it was a place where she could go back to school and earn money while learning a real skill. She quickly became an essential part of our Green Build Construction team β building trails, installing solar panels, and transforming spaces across San Diego.
"I wish we had 100 Nicoles on our Green Build team. She listens well, is willing to do any task, and takes great pride in her work." β Construction Manager Kyle Freeland
Nicole graduates in 2026 with plans to pursue a career in electrical engineering or contracting. We couldn't be prouder. ππΏ
