Would you like to know the thing I hate the most about being a pastor? The thing that makes me want to leap through a window and never come back to church?

It's when communicants look me square in the eyes when I'm giving the communion dismissal, when I say "the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bless and preserve you unto life everlasting."

Every time someone looks me in the eyes during those words, I look away. I can't handle it. I hate it.

Of course, I hate it not because it's wrong for them to make eye contact. Far from it. I hate it because, more than anything else, their gaze makes me keenly aware of how profoundly unworthy I am to give them such a sacred gift. Nothing makes me feel the filth of my sins more.

And yet, out of His mercy, God has called me to do exactly that. And through His word of forgiveness, my hands become clean. What a profound gift we have in the Sacrament of the Altar, that Jesus Christ should give Himself to the worthless and make them worthy.

@HVACwarfare Yes, where do these kids end up in the future? They say “I don’t feel anything at church” and end up Pentecostal,evangelical, etc. I’ve seen it happen in my family.
