Exit tickets named what students needed, and small groups did the rest.
Clarifying theme statements from simple ideas quickly became: "If we keep in our hearts that we are going to achieve our goals, we can make it."
So proud of this growth. #AtomNation
I looked back at 3 weeks of reading conference notes with my 9th graders.
Early notes:
“Mostly summary.”
“No jots.”
Now students are writing:
“Discrimination hurts the community.”
“People stand up for those who can’t speak.”
Conferences grow readers. 📚
9th graders prove children’s books hold BIG ideas. 💡📚
Students identified themes in Malala’s Magic Pencil and transferred those big ideas to their book club memoirs and their own lives.
“We live with the weight of other people’s actions and beliefs” ...I’ll remember that one.
“This is the first book I’ve read and really liked. Issues about injustice are really important to me.”
When our multilingual learners are given grade-level texts and space to think, they can do it.
All in English.
All thoughtful.
All theirs.
Language grows when ideas matter!
How do students choose to relax after finishing the WIDA test?
Coloring, word searches, and independent reading.
There’s something really beautiful about watching students exhale after doing something hard.
I'm so proud of their stamina! #AtomNation

A few weeks ago, students shared some concerns when it comes to writing poetry. After discussing types of poems, annotating poems together, and considering structure, students are writing their own poetry!
English 9 students have been working in partnerships during our poetry unit! Being able to discuss ideas and ask questions with partners has helped everyone’s understanding of figurative language. #AtomNation
English 9 HN students set goals for the new year and summed them up in one word. Here's to a consistent, organized, focused, productive, engaged, and happy 2024! #atomnation
