@LHCpodcast1 That explanation makes sense for 150 years ago. Today however, it is the influence of Arminian doctrine and practice. Rome is no longer the chief antagonist for American Lutheranism. The biggest threat is the influence of the radical side of the Reformation.

Let's not pretend that this hasn't happened in the last 30 years since bylaws were changed.

@TheDonStein @parvizbd Granted, but that doesn't mean this sort of resolution can't be abused. History is clear on abuses of broad powers with vague definitions. Elijah was called a "troubler of Israel" by Ahab and Luther was named a "wild boar in the vineyard" by Leo. They both "sowed discord"...

Some American Lutherans are against any form of Christian nationalism. They fear the history of men like Charles V or Frederick William III; but let us not forget men like Gustavus Adolphus and Fredrick the Wise. For secular authorities can change from Washington to Lenin/Mao.

@IndianaLutheran Yeah, I get it. Charity should be the starting place, but on the other hand we have a postmodern culture of feelings police that are ready to even criminalize speech that dissents or speech that offends subjective feelings. We have to be careful--slippery slope. etc.

Given their polemical writings/artwork, one wonders if the evangelical catholics of the 16th century would tolerate today's "Lutheranism". I doubt it. I think many of our people privately look down on our fathers. Most desire to keep Luther's name but jettison his boldness.

@IndianaLutheran I see what you are saying, but this sort of tone policing is a post modern phenomenon. Our Lutheran fathers used extreme polemics, by today's standards. Their writings, even the art they used was highly polemical, but we don't throw them under the "tone bus." Or should we?

@TheDonStein @parvizbd Don, my friend, that phrase is so broad that it could be used properly with Scripture, or it could be abused by a bad actor who has the authority to punish a whistleblower who stands for truth. Our Lutheran fathers were persecuted by civil authority and Rome, hence "Junker Jorg"

@TheDonStein @parvizbd If the Synod had guts on this they would have issued a public reprimand against Luther himself or Melanchthon or others who used alias or wrote under names that were not their birth names. Some even want Luther censured as a Nazi because of his treatise. You see where this goes

@TheDonStein @parvizbd The resolution is a sledgehammer, not a scalpel. It offers no nuance for those who might be persecuted for truth. What you seem to seek to do is lump everyone in together with those who give actual offense. Many Lutheran fathers didn't even use their birth names when writing.
