The raw material:
Neodymium is needed for powerful permanent magnets used in modern wind turbines and electric motors.

The origin:
The ore from the nearby Bayan Obo mine is chemically processed using strong acids.

The toxins:
Radioactive thorium and uranium, as well as heavy metals, are released during the separation process.

The lake:
The toxic and slightly radioactive sludge flows unfiltered into this enormous, artificial basin without a bottom seal, severely contaminating the soil and groundwater.
