From the time basketball players begin playing the sport at a young age, they learn to jump off the same leg for layups, dunks, and rebounds. Over the course of many years this can create an in balance between the right leg and the left leg.
When training athletes in the weight-room, I aim to do at least one unilateral exercise in every lower body lifting session. I believe for every two legged (bilateral) exercise you should do a one legged (unilateral) exercise.
Isolating each leg individually can help improve strength, balance, and stability, which can aid in athletic performance. In addition, training unilaterally can also help reduce the risk of injury.
