On the night of January 25, 2012, about two dozen operators from DEVGRU's (SEAL Team 6) Blue Squadron stepped off a US Air Force MC-130 high over the Somali desert and parachuted into the dark.

Their target was a pirate camp 12 miles north of Adado. American aid worker Jessica Buchanan and Danish colleague Poul Hagen Thisted had been held there for 93 days after being kidnapped while working a demining project. A $45 million ransom demand had gone unanswered, and Buchanan’s health was collapsing. The mission was Operation Octave Fusion.

The operators moved on foot from the drop zone, closed on the camp in silence, and hit it before the captors could react. Nine pirates were killed. Buchanan was under a blanket in pitch black when the shooting had started, and she thought it was another kidnapping or her own execution. Her blanket was pulled away, and a voice with an American accent said her name, and told her they were US military and they were taking her home. Both hostages were recovered unharmed. Not a single American was wounded

They walked to a prearranged pickup point, and Night Stalker helicopters from the 160th SOAR lifted them toward Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti. On the bird, someone from the team put a folded American flag in Buchanan’s hands. She later said that was when she finally started to breathe. Poul Thisted later remarked that it had been his lucky day to be kidnapped with an American.

Hours later, President Obama called Buchanan’s father, then walked out to deliver the State of the Union. The camp in the desert was empty except for the nine men who had refused to let two hostages go.
