We at the Synapse and Network Development Lab study how visual cortex neurons make synapses and communicate with each other to prepare the brain for vision.
E11 Bio is excited to share a major step towards brain mapping at 100x lower cost, making whole-brain connectomics at human & mouse scale feasible (🧠→🔬→💻). Critical for curing brain disorders, building human-like AI systems, and even simulating human brains. 1/N 🧵
Have you ever looked at traces from an extracellular recording and wondered what kind of neurons you are recording from? Five labs across three continents working with two species joined forces to solve this decades-old problem in systems neuroscience. 🧵
Starting the new year with our lab’s first paper in @NatComms!
🪫Synapses are powerhouses for plasticity & memory formation, but they are also energy hogs.
🔋VAP is our newfound anchor that tethers mitochondria near synapses, providing a critical local energy source for memory.
What do astrocytes, cannabinoid receptors and brain development (in particular critical periods) have to do with each other??
Read all about it in a new @biorxiv_neursci preprint from my postdoc time in the @Leveltlab

Single GABAergic, but not glutamatergic, neurons influence population dynamics in the barrel cortex of mouse pups, acting as "hub neurons" that exert an inhibitory influence on both spontaneous and sensory-evoked population bursts

Developing synapses form in dendritic domains. At postnatal day 9, some synapses (dots) are already organized in domains (color), which contain high-activity synapses (black outlines). At P12 synapse numbers and activity increase and most synapses are now in domains.
We were surprised to find how precisely connected developing neurons are! Our new study shows that synaptic inputs of pyramidal cells in the visual cortex are clustered already days before eye opening. #neuroscience#synapse#braindevelopment https://t.co/g71YXtHZnA
