A Sudanese migrant, Maker Mangok, has been jailed and faces deportation after a Victorian jury found him guilty of raping one Wangaratta woman and sexually assaulting another while they slept in a Melbourne apartment.

Mangok, 25 at sentence, arrived in Australia after time in a refugee camp and worked as a bricklayer.

He never became an Australian citizen.

On the night of 26–27 June 2023 the two women travelled from Wangaratta for a night out, drank at a nightclub and returned to a Spencer Street apartment.

Mangok was a guest in the flat.

County Court Judge Anne Hassan said he waited until they were asleep, then sexually violated both of them.

“You took a callous and calculated advantage of two women in circumstances where you realised they were in a vulnerable state,” she said.

“You were a guest in the apartment in which you took the opportunity to sexually violate two sleeping women.”

Mangok contested the charges through a week long trial and was found guilty.

He has maintained his innocence and told the court he was “in shock” at the conviction.

He was sentenced to just two years and nine months.

One victim said she had been diagnosed with complex PTSD, would need therapy for the rest of her life, had become reluctant to go out and had lost friends.

Judge Hassan noted that jail would weigh more heavily on him because he faces removal from Australia after his sentence and that deportation would “destroy” his chance to remain settled here.

She said he could be taken from prison into immigration detention once the non parole period ends.

Mangok was a registered sex offender.
