Once you get your first job, other job opportunities will start coming.
That first job is the most challenging one.
So, keep knocking until the door opens.
Never done this before, but it’s worth a shot. Can we flood the replies with kind words for my wife?
She’s truly the best woman I know, and I’d love for her to open X to a timeline full of love 🖤
A former bastard lecturer of mine from Unilag who sexually harassed me in 100level, stole a kiss from me in his office, I was disgusted and walked out. He Waited till I was in 400 level to give me an F. I went to meet him to know how that happened because I was so sure I did better after getting an A in my project defense and he said he would change the result to a D only if he gave me his D.
He had his story published on BBC because they set him up with a woman who had a spy camera. When She went to his office, he made a very cold statement. He said “I pity fine girls like you because you are all vulnerable”.
He was jailed for a while. Dr Igbeneghu may you rot in hell.
Sometimes when I see petty traders, I do mental calculation of their entire goods and pity them.
A roadside corn seller that faces heat and smoke all day to sell only 100 pieces of corn at N300 each = N30,000. Turnover. Not profit.
I feel some pity.
Then I remember my own company's annual turnover is another person's gift.
I hold at least 100 meetings in a year, travel every other week, coordinate a team of 30, run calculations, promote the business every day online, strategize, sometimes sleepless nights, hire tax consultants, among others.
All the above stress to generate the revenue.
And someone else will casually give someone a gift that is worth that annual revenue.
I just think to myself, "Pity the woman, but someone else is pitying you too for doing all that just to generate an amount the person can dash someone in a day".
Life na level by level.
The company I worked in had 3 rounds of layoffs in my 10 years there.
Here are my observations in general
1. If your department is getting too big with many people being recruited, be careful. During layoff, your department’s hair may be the first to be shaved. There were only 2 of us in tax. About the only department not affected in all the three rounds. A number game.
2. If you are doing same work and your pay is continuously rising due to general annual payrises over time, egungun be careful. A young guy that will do that work for less your pay and grow may be favoured during layoff
3. If you are in Admin and other less technical roles, be careful. Especially if your pay is high
4. If you have had issue with a senior Oga before, be careful
5. If you have great interpersonal skills, it may save you. Grapevine had it that someone was in the layoff list until the eve of the layoff day was spared because of this soft skill. Name removed and they were posted to another department where their non-technical but human skill was considered a strength.
6. If you are multi-talented, it may save you. If you’re an accountant, for example, be the MC at your corporate event, volunteer for roles, participate in other activities. Don't likit yourself to accounting job.
7. Corporate institutional memory residing in you may also save you. You led an ERP change process? You led a major project? You’re the go-to for some fixes? But this may not be enough if a younger guy that worked with you is considered ripe enough.
8. Finally, plenty bootlicking . But not always enough. In fact, it may work against you if power changes hands and the camp you have been bootlicking are gradually eased out. I know someone stuck in one role because of this.
I first posted this last year.
Don’t let him whine you o.
Sir J reads, a lot.
You can’t achieve anything close to what he has without being a voracious reader.
I remember in Primary School. He knows all the states, capitals and their governors names. And many other things.
I can’t even remember the name of the governor of the next state to us then.
He will read newspapers and bamboozle us with current affairs issues.
Again, don’t let his humility fool you.
Sir J nah agba reader/scholar.
Always has. Still is.
Lol
Easily MT.
At some point in late secondary school and early university, I was avoiding him because he wanted to "wound" me with academic targets that I thought were unrealistic.
We wanted to write JAMB in 2000 and this guy was telling me he wanted to make Top 3 in Nigeria and have his name at the back of JAMB brochure (JAMB used to publish names of top 3 performers at the back of brochure then). Ended up scoring 296. Only 10 people score 300+ in Nigeria that year. Bosun Johnson of ISI Ibadan led with 347.
I also first heard the acronym CGPA from him. In my mind: "Bro, we just finished secondary and you were talking CGPA even before we resumed in uni."
He got into Ife a year before me (with JAMB he wrote in SSS 2). He photocopied the notes of his room mate studying the course I was coming to study in Ife and sent to me to be reading before I resumed.
He was a very ambitious young man. And pulled a less talented me along.
He was by far a heavier reader than me. And more talented too.
