this morning i remembered jeremiah 29:11; God’s plans are still good, even when life feels uncertain. the pause has purpose, waiting holds hope, and the future being written is greater than the worry.

this reminds me of 2 chronicles 7 vs 14. God told solomon that if his people who are called by his name will humble themselves, pray, seek his face and turn from their wicked ways, then he will hear from heaven and heal their land.

we often quote the praying part. we love the fasting. we gather for vigils. but the turning from wicked ways is where the issue is. national healing is tied not just to prayer meetings but to repentance and obedience. prayer without repentance can’t work.

look at the story of israel during the time of prophet jeremiah. the people kept saying the temple of the lord, the temple of the lord, as if the presence of a building guaranteed safety. meanwhile there was corruption, oppression of the poor, shedding of innocent blood.

jeremiah stood at the gate of the temple and told them that trusting in religious activity without changing their ways would not save them. it sounded harsh, but it was true. God was not impressed by numbers. he was looking for hearts.

even in the new testament, jesus wept over jerusalem. it was a city full of religious leaders, festivals and scripture readers. yet he said they did not know the things that make for peace. they honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far away. that is a painful place for any nation to be.

nigeria today has churches on every street. we have worship nights, conferences, prayer challenges, online gatherings like hallelujah challenge. yet we must ask ourselves. has our private life changed. has integrity increased in business. has justice increased in leadership. have we stopped cheating, lying and oppressing one another. revival is not measured by how many people gather. it is measured by how many people are transformed.

there is also the story of nineveh in the book of jonah. that city was wicked, but when jonah preached, from the king to the common man, they humbled themselves. they fasted. they turned from violence. the bible says God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. then he relented from the disaster. it was not just prayer. it was change.

so when pastor nathaniel says let us pray for nigeria first, he is echoing the heart of the prophets. but our prayer must be deep. we must ask God to search us first. judgment begins in the house of God. if the church becomes light indeed, the nation will feel it. if believers live differently in offices, politics, schools and markets, darkness will have less room to operate.

a nation does not become better because there are more microphones. it becomes better because there are more righteous men and women. abraham once asked God if he would spare sodom for the sake of righteous people. God agreed. that shows the weight of true righteousness.

so we pray. but we also repent. we examine ourselves. we teach our children truth. we refuse corruption even when it costs us. that is how spiritual activity becomes spiritual impact. that is how prayer moves from the earth to change in heaven.
