Basically, this Russian training accident happened because someone took a rotary machine gun from a helicopter and treated it like a normal ground gun.

The YakB-12.7 was originally made for the Mi-24 attack helicopter. It has brutal recoil, and the forces it produces are nothing like a regular machine gun. On a helicopter, the airframe and mount can absorb that madness.

But once you slap it onto a simple ground setup, it suddenly develops a personality.

The IFAB Laws of the Game are clear: the “mistaken identity” provision applies only when the referee disciplines the wrong player. It is not a mechanism to overturn a decision made in a duel.

The fact that something like this may have happened (Almiron incident) before does not make the decision correct.

FIFA should explain the legal basis for this interpretation. Otherwise, any incorrectly judged duel resulting in a yellow card could be reopened under the guise of “mistaken identity,” which is not what the law intends.
