How to keep yourself safe:

🚰 Drink water BEFORE you're thirsty, thirst means you're already dehydrated

🪟 Close curtains and blinds during the day, not just windows, sunlight heats rooms fast

🌡️ Avoid being outside between 11am and 4pm, peak heat hours

👕 Wear loose, light coloured clothing, dark colours absorb heat

🧊 Cool your wrists and neck with cold water, drops your core temperature fast

🧓 Check on elderly neighbours and relatives, they feel heat less acutely and are highest risk

🚗 NEVER sit in a parked car, temperatures can hit fatal levels within minutes

📵 Don't rely on "feeling fine", heat stroke gives very little warning

Here's why it's so deadly:

Your body stops cooling itself. When the heat is extreme and humidity is high, sweating stops working.
Your internal temperature rises silently.
No dramatic warning signs.
You just feel "a bit tired", and then it becomes an emergency.

By the time you feel truly unwell, you're already in danger.

The scariest thing about a heatwave isn't the heat.

It's how normal everything feels right before it kills you.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Iran and the United States are giving opposite accounts of a weekend clash at sea.

The IRGC says its Aerospace Force fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. aircraft carrier and a destroyer, claims both ships were hit, and says they left the area.

Former IRGC official Mohsen Rezaei, in comments circulating on video, warned that striking a warship could kill hundreds of sailors and said Washington had not taken earlier threats seriously.

U.S. Central Command says Iranian missiles were launched at two Navy ships, the vessels evaded the attacks, and no American personnel were harmed.

CENTCOM also said U.S. forces then struck three Iranian crude oil tankers.

Independent confirmation of damage to the U.S. ships has not been published.

The exchange is part of the wider maritime fight around the Gulf and Hormuz.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 A follow-up clip circulating from Iranian officials says Tehran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but only if the United States stops what they call sabotage, threats, and attacks.

That message is being paired with IRGC claims that missiles were fired at U.S. warships in the past two days and that the ships withdrew.

Washington’s version is that the ships evaded the launches, no U.S. personnel were hurt, and American forces then hit Iranian oil tankers.

Oil transit through Hormuz is still the core dispute: U.S. officials say volumes are recovering under Navy escort; Iran says the waterway stays a pressure point until the blockade and strikes end.

Donald Trump’s face is officially on a U.S. dollar coin while he is STILL President.

The U.S. Mint released the special $1 coin on 2 September as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations. One side features Trump alongside “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1776 ~ 2026”. Flip it over and you’ll find the Presidential Seal with “250” across the shield.

What makes this so unusual is that Trump is alive and currently sitting in the White House.

America has historically been extremely cautious about putting living people on its money, partly because of concerns about currency becoming a symbol of personal glorification. The Trump coin has therefore sparked debate over both tradition and the laws governing who can appear on American currency.

And despite looking gold, there isn’t actually any gold in it. The coin is mostly copper, alongside zinc, manganese and nickel.

You’ll also have to pay considerably more than $1 to buy one directly from the Mint. A roll of 25 costs $61, while a bag of 100 costs $154.50. They have a circulating finish and are legal tender, although the Mint says the coins sold in these products have not been placed into general circulation.

Whatever you think of Trump, having a sitting president’s face staring back from a $1 coin is a piece of American history people will probably be talking about long after 2026.

🇺🇸 A University of Miami analysis of more than 30 years of data finds U.S. cancer deaths linked to alcohol have roughly doubled, from about 11,000 in 1990 to more than 23,000 in 2023.

The rise is steepest among people over 55.

Among men in that group, liver cancer was the leading alcohol-related cancer death; among women, breast cancer.

Under 55, colon cancer was the top alcohol-linked cancer death for men.

The study ties drinking not only to liver cancer but also to breast, colorectal, and several other sites.

ABC’s Dr. Darien Sutton walked through the findings as public-health researchers keep pressing that even modest daily drinking can raise risk.

🇩🇪 Saxony-Anhalt’s state election delivered a historic night for AfD and a grim one for the CDU.

Projections put AfD around 44.5 percent, more than double its 2021 result and the party’s strongest showing in any German state vote.

The CDU, which had governed the state, collapsed to about 18.5 percent, roughly half of its last score.

Footage from the two camps tells the story: AfD headquarters celebrating the result, CDU rooms going quiet as the count came in.

AfD is short of a clear majority, and other parties still refuse to govern with it, so who actually forms the next state government is not settled yet.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 President Trump said oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz is back near pre-war levels, about 18 million barrels a day versus roughly 20 million before the conflict, or around 90 percent of the old flow.

The White House and Energy Secretary Chris Wright have been arguing that U.S. naval escorts are keeping product moving and that many ships sail with transponders off, so public trackers miss the real volume.

Independent ship-tracking firms such as Kpler and PortWatch have published much lower transit counts for recent days and weeks.

The gap between official U.S. figures and commercial AIS data remains unresolved.

🇺🇸 New video from Miami International shows thick smoke around the Prime Air Boeing 767 after it left Runway 30.

The cargo jet, which arrived from San Juan, overran the paved surface, crossed a perimeter road and a nearby avenue, and came to rest off the airfield. Emergency crews are on scene.

The FAA has confirmed the overrun and is investigating; flights at MIA were halted while the aircraft sits disabled.

No official injury tally or cause has been issued yet.

The carrier strike group wrapped a planned few days in the Pattaya area following an unusually long stretch at sea.

She hosted a programme about crime. A Cairo court has now sentenced her to hang.

Sarah Khalifa, 39, is best known in Egypt for Mission Impossible, a television programme dealing with crime. She and 11 others have been sentenced to death by hanging after being convicted of drugs charges.

According to state-owned al-Ahram, the court found they were part of a criminal gang importing ingredients used to manufacture drugs with the intent to sell them. They were also convicted over illegal firearms and ammunition.

The scale was significant. Authorities seized more than 750kg of narcotics and the raw materials to produce them. Twenty witnesses gave statements, alongside electronic evidence including conversations and video clips.

Of the wider case, nine other defendants received life imprisonment and seven were acquitted.

She has denied the charges throughout. Asked in court last September about her alleged role, Khalifa said she had never seen any drugs until she was photographed with them inside the anti-narcotics authority offices.

Her lawyer has confirmed she will appeal. The sentence is not final.
⠀
That’s where it gets interesting, because the verdict took a month to become official. It was first announced in August, then only confirmed after the court obtained a religious opinion from Egypt’s grand mufti, a legal requirement in every death penalty case.

For context on how often these sentences are carried out, Amnesty International recorded 492 death sentences in Egypt across 2025. Twenty-three were actually carried out. Amnesty has also argued that drug offences do not amount to intentional killing, the threshold to which international standards say capital punishment must be restricted.

Because that’s what Xabi Alonso is. The two came through together at Antiguoko in San Sebastián, the youth side that also produced Andoni Iraola, a team so dominant locally that people called them the Basque Dream Team.

And here’s the part that stings. In summer 2004, Arteta signed for Real Sociedad specifically so the two could finally play together. Alonso was sold to Liverpool almost immediately. They never shared a pitch as teammates.
