Splitting is a primitive defence.
We all use it, but some adults rely on it.
However, in early life, it is essential for us all.
Why?
Because the infant cannot yet bear ambivalence—that something can be both good and bad. 🧵
“I’ve already told you the answer that there is nothing to search for. In this respect, you’re not neurotic, although others might think you are. You are a seeker, and I respect that, and you’ll find what you need. That’s how it works. So, you don’t need to trick me into having a drink so you can ask the same questions. The fact that I was sitting next to you, the synchronicity, that should be proof enough of the mystery that is working for you. You can’t contain the mystery, can’t figure it out, name it, or make sense of it, so you can just give up and let it take you, as I said, where it must go. You don’t need more from me. I repeat, you are not neurotic or lost – you are just wrestling with the great paradox and thank God for that.”
