🇮🇳 #HeroesOfKargil: On the night of 30 June/ 1 July 1999, the near-vertical, frozen cliff of Point 4812 in the Batalik sector looked impossible to scale. A 24 year old officer from Shillong, of 12 JAK LI, led his column up that sheer face from the southeastern direction.

Educated at Don Bosco Technical School and St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, and commissioned after training at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, the young officer of Tangkhul Naga and Khasi heritage used every skill of field craft to make the near-impossible ascent.

When the assault stalled under a blistering hail of automatic fire that pinned his men for about two hours, he did not hesitate. Charging single-handedly across open ground with utter disregard for personal safety, he lobbed grenades into the first bunker, neutralizing six enemy soldiers.

Without pausing, he threw himself at a second bunker to snatch the enemy’s Universal Machine Gun with his bare hands.

A brutal storm of bullets struck him at point-blank range.

Severely wounded and bleeding heavily, Lt. Nongrum refused evacuation. He kept fighting and directing his men until he finally collapsed. His extraordinary courage stunned the enemy long enough for his troops to surge forward, clear the remaining bunkers, and secure the peak.

Point 4812 was won.

For his supreme sacrifice and unmatched leadership, Meghalaya’s brave son was posthumously promoted to Captain and awarded the Maha Vir Chakra. He remains the only soldier from Meghalaya to receive this distinction. Today his memory lives on in Shillong through Clifford Nongrum Square, a bust at the Rhino Museum, and an auditorium named after him at the JAK LI Centre.

Everybody has seen Lakshya, where Hrithik Roshan climbs a steep hill through cracks, shocks the enemy, and captures the post.

That was a real story of then-Capt. Shyamal Sinha, VrC, of 9 Kumaon/27 Rajput.

He was tasked with capturing Point 5770.

It was one of the most audacious mountain assaults of the Kargil War.

His team climbed the steep mountain through cracks and narrow ledges, reaching the top from an unexpected direction.

This move shocked the Pakistanis.

The surprise assault succeeded in capturing the post.

Gen. V. P. Malik described it as one of the toughest and most daring operations of the war, comparable to the capture of Bana Top in 1987.

Capt. Shyamal Sinha was awarded the Vir Chakra for his exceptional courage.
He is not with us now, unfortunately he lost his life during a mountaineering expedition.

My respect for Captain Amrinder Singh has increased a lot today. He served as Chief Minister of Punjab for many years, but unlike Bhagwant Mann, he never bowed before the Jathedars of Akal Takht or cried in front of them. He never praised or glorified Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. When Canada’s Sikh minister Harjit Singh and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wanted to meet him during their visit to Punjab, he firmly refused, saying they support Khalistan. Later, when diplomatic pressure forced a meeting, he handed them a list of Khalistani terrorists and told them clearly to eliminate those elements from Canada.
