Hey friends, I'm super-thrilled to announce my next book, due out in September, about a peak-bagging challenge I undertook and what I learned about minimalism, the mountains, and myself.

Thank you @UlyssesPress and @firerooster
Thank you Terrell Johnson for the Q&A about my running career and chance to talk about the themes in Chasing the Grid
Terrell's substack profiles runners and races and is a fun read - check it out

I got to hang out with the celebrity dog at Bleu's Animal Rescue Run 5k, which must have given me good luck, as I came in #3 overall which is a rare podium finish for me (there was no podium or awards). Now to be fair, it was a small race, not even 10,000 people* but still it was a thrill to have the police car and lead runners in sight the whole time, and gradually pass people who were probably 1/3 my age. Adding to the drama, some of the pavement was bumpy and some smooth, and there were some interesting hills. It took me a while to catch my breath after!
*Much less!
@TuckerGoodrich@BarefootTed@mcdougalchris Interesting. Looks pretty comfy. I read that the "marathon monks" had sandals made of straw which tended to disintegrate over time. Maybe similar
@CaryKelly11 having lived in a high tick area for 30 years, I would say the most important defense is mindfulness, i.e., paying-attention-fulness. Check yourself for them and NEVER ignore that tiny tickle when one is crawling on your skin
8 miles ๐ฃ in the grasslands, and it's nice to have some ๐ after the rainiest Memorial Day Weekend ever! Now, most of the time the deer keep their distance as in like 200 meters away, but I came around a turn and saw this guy and made a point to creep by slowly. My hunter-gatherer ancestors from long ago would have been like ๐น ๐
I had a lot of fun with Ivan on the Hikes and Mics podcast (link in comments) - thanks to his thoughtful questions. We talked about
- connection with nature thru barefoot and thru observing and learning
- "good medicine" in the wilderness as the foundation of emotional health
- how we can go out into the wild in search of meaningful experiences and then share them
- the power of long-term projects (like my 1000 mountain quest) to generate energy
- Thoreau's warning about lives of "quiet desperation," which is living in a low energy state
- How injury helps you learn about your body and how to heal yourself
If you have a moment, give it a listen!
@FitKateFitness It took me until I was like 40 to realize how important meat is for me. My stomach was like, dude, I'd been trying to tell you for so long why didn't you listen? I guess I was brainwashed by advertising
Subtle change in my go-to breakfast: I swapped an egg for an extra order of bacon (extra crispy of course), so this is 3 eggs over easy and 2 orders of bacon, plus avocado.
I know this could come across as controversial within the egg-thusiast branch of the keto community (people like @ClausCarlsen1 and @SamaHoole) -- but I think it's really important for people to understand YOU CAN ORDER MORE THAN ONE ORDER OF BACON
Just make sure you ask for it as "extra crispy" because there is this really unfortunate trend where most places cook it til it's chewy, which is not ideal
Dropped the toast years ago based on @VinnieTortorich #NSNG plus it's so creepy that wheat is being harvested with glyphosate ๐คข
