@eddieizzard From a conversation between two physicists:
"Hanging out with gravity is like watching Eddie Izzard, the same trippy feeling that the world makes more sense upside down. "

@LiviaGershon I'll give it a whirl...

@RadioFreeTom Newspapers are one thing, but academic journals publishing publicly funded research are quite another.

@CburgesCliff I heard that because of mandatory caps on shift lengths residents encounter fewer patients and procedures.

They used to engage in some flexibility in order to stick with good learning opportunities but they can't do that now.

It does seem like a bitter pill though.

@aliveness_ape From what I hear he wanted an extra bit of time to finish reading a bill before voting on it. It's a mess to be sure.

@JanevskiAlex @kareem_carr To be sure, landing a BEM on another planet is absurdly difficult and unlikely. But sending robots to another planet is far easier, and sending radio signals is downright achievable.

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@bentsolutionsau @kareem_carr Exactly! This line of thinking leads one to think seriously about a Great Filter of one kind or another, and maybe existential risks are something we should take seriously.

@LiviaGershon Maybe a better way to say it is that for me "justice" is most often a political word that people use in service of some other message. So when I hear it my first response is to try and figure out what that message is.

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@LiviaGershon For me the word on its own doesn't carry much meaning either way. It can land much differently depending on the context.

@kareem_carr Here is a long and nuanced personal essay on this topic:

@refashionista "By my feet, I care not"

Sold me right there.

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@A_P_Delchi I'm a sucker for when comics artists draw teams of real people. Suddenly we all look like super heroes in everyday clothing.

Which, of course, we are.

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@ZJemptv @refashionista The orgliginal gn plot used a nuclear war to move the country to facism, which even back in 1988 Alan Moore admitted was naive. The Wachowskis quite rightly let that part go.

@kareem_carr More like $1-2/mo for me

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@kareem_carr What about low temperature physics?

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@MissHelveticaB Only to remember that you parked at City Hall...

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@berner41668312 @kareem_carr Um, complex numbers are crucial to several parts of engineering, most notably the modelling of electric waves propagating through circuit elements.

[Sean Cavanagh @LongInTheTooth]

@kareem_carr I often think of Andrew Wiles, spending 6 years working in secrecy on a project most people thought was impossible.

His supervisors knew something was up, but faced a really difficult problem; Is he on a path to greatness or horrible suffering? There is no way to tell.

@ArnoRosenfeld The Ottawa Citizen used to have 12 people just covering the school board. Now one or two cover it for both city papers.
