Today’s story behind the numbers: two gang members were sentenced to life in federal prison for their roles in a murder and COVID-19 fraud scheme.

Lawrence Turner and Ronnell Bowman of Milwaukee, members of the Wild 100s gang, paid another gang member $10,000 to carry out a murder which resulted in the victim being ambushed and shot over two dozen times in their grandparents’ home.

They also plead guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud for submitting numerous fraudulent COVID‑19 unemployment insurance claims totaling more than $1 million between the two men. This is part of a larger fraud case that has led to the conviction of 28 other co‑conspirators who wrongfully obtained over $10 million in federal unemployment benefits. They used this money to purchase firearms, controlled substances, jewelry, and vacations, and to solicit murder for hire.

Thanks to the investigation of @FBIMilwaukee and law enforcement partners, this conviction and sentencing comes during this #FBI’s record-breaking crackdown on both gang violence and fraud with over 650 gangs and criminal enterprises disrupted (up 322%) and over 340 complex financial crimes and fraud arrests in 2026 alone.
