My GGF Private William Walker Allen. Joined 8th Lincolns 31 August 1914. Battle of Loos would be disaster a disaster for the BEF. Initial early successes stalled as Reserves were held too far behind and logistics to get the men to the front were none existent.

Huge second day at Loos attack on Hill 70 would go in at 9am and fail. German counterattack through Bois Hugo would destabilise 63 Bde. Brig-Gen Tom Nichols was KIA. Attack by elements of 21st and 24th Divs reaches German wire but repulsed with heavy losses.

"The heroine of Loos" Emilienne Moreau distinguished herself during the Battle of Loos in 1915, then aged 17, giving information on German positions to British soldiers, treating the wounded and even killing four German soldiers.

Quarry Cemetery. Nestled in an old chalk pit near the Hohenzollern Redoubt and one of the most distinctive @CWGC sites I’ve seen. Inside, Pte McKinney of 6th Connaught Rangers rests by an unknown German soldier, near to the Queen Mother’s brother Capt Fergus Bowes-Lyon. #Loos

St Patrick’s @CWGC Cemetery in #Loos at last light. Begun in 1915 and used by the 16th (Irish) Division during its time here the following year.

Daybreak outside Hulluch, in front of the position held by 8th Royal Dublin Fusiliers on 27 April 1916. That dawn, a cloud of smoke and gas rolling across these fields signalled the first of a pair of devastating German attacks on 16th (Irish) and 15th (Scottish) Divisions. #Loos
