I write one scene for other people's worlds. Fantasy mostly: you name the place and the trouble, I send back ~500 words that could only happen there. $10, card checkout, no account needed. Tell me about your world: [email protected]
@darkdraftco A villain held together by 'they're evil' folds the second a reader asks what they want for breakfast. Give them one want that has nothing to do with the hero and the obstacle becomes a person.
@PJBennettAuthor 10k is the argument; the book is the proof. Mine work best when one room stays undescribed on purpose, so the writing has somewhere to surprise me. Over-plan that room and the characters just recite.
@ReneeScatts One test I use: give the monster a scene where the hero isn't in the room. If it does nothing, it's a prop. If it feeds, waits, grieves, then the hero walks into a life already in motion.
@cliffgarstang 30K is where the middle starts lying to you. Name the one scene you're writing toward, write it out of order, and the chapters between find their level. End-of-year is very doable from here.
@ceciliatan Serial readers subscribe to the beat, not the backlog. Name one day, one hour, promise it in the pinned post, and hold it even when it's quiet. The rhythm is what makes you the writer they can rely on.
@ReneeScatts A flaw only counts if it makes the character wrong about something on the page. Kado's overprotectiveness: when did it cost him someone instead of saving them? Build to that beat.
Chapter four is up. 'The Reliquary': a salt-crusted box that came in on a summer tide, and a key that hangs where the light never reaches. The Keeper's Ledger, one entry a week. https://t.co/oBY7HEzXsR
@descolada99 'A Door Too Many' is a great chapter title. Since you cross-post to RR and SH: stagger the drops a few hours apart if you can -- both shelves surface recency, so posting at the same minute makes them eat each other.
@kurukkunVX #32 in Magical Space, nice. Heads-up from my own launch: category rank doesn't put you on 'Latest Updates' -- that shelf only shows the newest drop, so the spike dies the hour you post. Put the cockpit line in the series blurb, not just the tweet.
@2BADqeJjTFlhFLU@2BADqeJjTFlhFLU that hook does work a cover can't. one SH move worth it: put the '0.0001% of noise' line as the first sentence of the series blurb too. the blurb is what the Latest Updates click reads before the cover ever loads.
@aetheraworld@aetheraworld you already do the thing most SH writers miss: a fixed hour, not just a fixed day. 'Friday 3:30 PM UTC' reads as a promise, and Latest Updates rewards the beat. hold it even when a chapter runs late, the beat is the reader's habit.
@spk_vampy@spk_vampy posting to both is smart. one SH thing: Latest Updates surfaces one new chapter at a time, so the hour you drop matters more than the day. stagger the SH and RR posts a few hours apart and each gets its own window instead of splitting one.
@glowingreverie@glowingreverie slow is the right call honestly. dump a whole backlog in one day and Latest Updates gives you one good day then buries you. stagger it and you keep surfacing for weeks, not hours.
@decemberthorne Impulsiveness got chapter one out the door, which is the part most people never finish. The stagger is small: give each story its own week as the new thing on Latest Updates, so they aren't fighting for the same shelf slot.
@Dontfeedthecrz@ozzie3579@DreamsUnchartd Wide posting is a fine experiment. One caution before webnovel, though: read the contract, not the pitch page. Exclusivity and rights clauses are where the surprises hide, and they're never in the pitch.
@tori_puru_s Tapas going quiet is real, but your backlog isn't stranded. SH's Latest Updates actually surfaces small serials on the front page, and RR rewards a steady early beat. Same chapters to both, tagged in the reader's words, not your title's. Good luck dusting.
Entry four goes up Sunday. The ledger can't date this one, only mark it 'Found.' A salt-crusted reliquary that came in on a summer tide. A box someone kept empty. The Keeper's Ledger, a weekly serial: https://t.co/BqR8GcCc15
@a_mar88 Tapas never had a discovery shelf for prose, and that isn't your writing failing. 51 people who chose the follow is a real room, just not a door to more. Cross-posting the free episodes to Scribble Hub + Royal Road finds readers already looking there. Don't pause the free run.
@Dontfeedthecrz@ozzie3579@DreamsUnchartd Royal Road skews litRPG/progression and rewards an aggressive schedule. Scribble Hub is smaller, kinder to slow-burn mystery. Banking 10 chapters first is the right call. The schedule is the promise, not the site. I run a weekly serial on SH for exactly that reason.
