In 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend were walking in a park in England when a gang attacked them. One attacker later said they kicked her head like a football.
On the night of August 10, 2007, Sophie Lancaster, 20, and Robert Maltby, 21, left a friend's house in Bacup, Lancashire, UK. At a local petrol station they stopped to buy cigarettes and fell into conversation with a group of local teenagers who seemed friendly.
They walked together into Stubbylee Park. Without any provocation, the gang swarmed Robert, kicking and punching him until he was unconscious.
Sophie threw herself over him to protect his head. The group turned on her. Afterwards the attackers bragged to friends: "There's two moshers nearly dead up Bacup park — you wanna see them — they're a right mess."
The judge at Preston Crown Court explicitly recognised the attack as a hate crime, one of the first times in British legal history that violence against someone for their subculture identity had been treated as such.
Sophie never regained consciousness. She d*ed thirteen days later.
Ryan Herbert and Brendan Harris were convicted of m*rder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The three others were jailed for grievous bodily harm.
Sophie was two months away from her 21st birthday.
