VIDEO: I've Done Nothing To Warrant Impeachment — Fubara

The embattled Governor of River State, Siminalayi Fubara has declared that he has done nothing to warrant impeachment by the state House of Assembly.

Fubara said this on Monday while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex, shortly after the House members, led by their Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, convened to begin the impeachment process against him.

“Let them come out and tell Rivers people that offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment, that is what I want” the governor said while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.

He added, "Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press.”

The governor, who assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that there were gunshots and firing of teargas within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday as some lawmakers sat to begin an impeachment process on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The lawmakers also suspended the leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor.

The development occurred hours after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.

VIDEO: Gunshots At Rivers Assembly As Lawmakers Begin Governor's Impeachment

There were gunshots and firing of teargas within the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex on Monday as some lawmakers sat to begin an impeachment process on Governor Siminalayi Fubara. 

About 23 lawmakers, including the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, who presided over the sitting, resolved to begin the process. 

The lawmakers also suspended the leader of the House, Edison Ehie, and some of their colleagues believed to be loyal to the governor. 

Recall that there was an explosion at the assembly complex on Sunday night as the  chamber was razed. 

Lawmakers immediately after the sitting, were seen at about 8:15am driving out of the Assembly with heavy security escorts.

Following the gunshot and firing of teargas, people ran helter-skelter as policemen chased people, including workers whose offices are located within the area.
