I'm sure it's meant as as a gentle poke at the way the show - and the times - have moved on, and is meant in a positive way. I just hope there's not too much of that in what will be Capaldi's final (and probably heartbreaking) salute.

In fact, the most iconic scene for me from the Hartnell era is probably in The War Machines, with him surrounded by young people in a nightclub, and somehow never seeming out of place. A proper, timeless iconoclast.

Disappointed by the Christmas quotes floating about showing the First Doctor telling Bill to clean the TARDIS. In spite of the time, (and some of the later Doctors occasional remarks), I never thought Hartnell's Doctor was ever really like that at all.
