At the beginning of this year, Dr. Busingye Kabumba made a deliberate decision to quit active participation on X.

He simultaneously decided to end his weekly column in The Observer. When he initially launched the column, Kabumba stated his motivation was to give back to a country that had given him so much. However, in his final article, titled "Constitutionally speaking…The final word," he explained that he was stopping because he had exhaustively said everything he possibly could regarding constitutionalism and the rule of law.

Kabumba observed that further legal commentary was futile because the 1995 Constitution had effectively been reduced to a "dead letter" or a "book of lies" by systemic political manipulation and military overreach. He noted that the country's governance structure had tipped past a critical threshold into a "military ethnocracy" where the judiciary is fully subordinated to executive power.

He felt the political and human rights environment was actively spiraling out of hand, leaving citizens deeply frustrated.

Ultimately, he concluded that continuing to write into the public square offered no further value, as the legal and democratic foundations of the country had completely deteriorated.

The situation since Dr Kabumba’s ‘exit’ has got worse! 

When one of Uganda's leading legal minds decides that speaking up is no longer enough, everyone should pay attention!

If you are an active opposition politician with friends or relatives in NRM, their behavior alone is proof they are under capture.

Many are too afraid to even answer your calls. If they must talk to you, They’d rather use an unknown number.
Others will support an NRM stranger, but not you their relative that belongs to the Opposition!
They fear losing their jobs. Some fear being labeled rebels or sellouts.

In 2012, while still at campus, I was arrested and remanded to Luzira for co-authoring a book questioning M7’s “fundamental change” lies.
My father, who has always had my back, mobilized relatives to come and stand with me at LDC court.
One relative who by then was working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs showed up heavily masked, avoiding cameras. He was afraid to be seen with me.

😂 And don’t get me started on those who were once with us in the trenches and later got jobs at Parliament. They all suddenly mastered hide and seek. Many ran from us as fast as their legs could carry them.

Bravo to those who have not disowned us, despite our different political orientations.
