BREAKING: Hurricane Lowell is now a Category 5.

160 mph winds. About 445 miles south of Hilo, Hawaii.

A day and a half ago this was a tropical storm. It gained 75 mph of wind in a single day.

Lowell is only the 8th hurricane on record to reach Category 5 in the Central Pacific. The last one was Walaka in 2018.

The forecast keeps it south of Hawaii this week, but the islands get big surf and rip currents over the next few days.

We are watching it closely.

I too used to look at 1.5°C above pre-industrial temps and think pffft, that's nothing. We'll get slightly warmer summers. Great.

And then I started looking into it more when I saw the flooding, heatwaves, fires, crazy hurricanes. It was then I knew.

I realised I was confusing weather with climate.

When your local temperature goes up 1.5°C in an afternoon, you don't even notice. But when the entire planet retains that much extra energy 24/7, the reality changes completely.

Think of it like the human body. Your normal temperature is 37°C. If your core temp rises by 1.5°C, you don't just feel "a little warmer." You have a fever. If it rises by 3°C, you are in the hospital with organ failure.

That 1.5°C isn't an even, gentle warming. It is raw atmospheric fuel.

And now, time has officially run out. The United Nations just announced that exceeding 1.5°C is now completely unavoidable. We are officially tracking toward a peak of at least 1.8°C only if we do everything perfectly. Under our current trajectory, we are heading straight for 2.6°C.

Climate change is no longer a linear problem, it is a compounding one.

Scientists are watching three distinct threats merge into a single crisis. First, we are seeing compound climate events, where multiple disasters like a record heatwave and a severe drought strike a region simultaneously to create a much larger crisis.

This triggers cascading impacts, a domino effect where agricultural failures quickly spiral into food shortages, supply chain chaos, and economic instability.

Ultimately, this acceleration feeds into positive feedback loops, where massive wildfires and melting permafrost release billions of tonnes of trapped greenhouse gases, forcing the planet to heat itself even faster.

We are witnessing a chain reaction where one disaster feeds the next in a loop we cannot stop.

The planet will keep getting hotter, even with ongoing efforts to slow the temperature rise. But choices exist.  

Every fraction of a degree prevented, and every year by which the overshoot period is shortened, will save lives, protect ecosystems, and reduce economic losses.

🚨 No more sugarcoating. The UN just confirmed the 1.5°C climate limit is effectively dead. We will breach it within years, not decades. We are officially entering a dangerous "overshoot" era. Current policies track us to a lethal 2.6°C.

What does crossing 1.5°C actually mean? It means a massive surge in compounding weather disasters. We aren't just talking about hotter days, as we are looking at abrupt, unpredictable severe droughts, collapsing ice sheets, and extreme floods happening all at once.

It gets worse. Rising sea levels will trigger permanent coastal submersion, threatening to completely swallow island nations. Simultaneously, brutal severe droughts will collapse global crop yields, causing skyrocketing food prices and widespread shortages.

We are completely unprepared.

This post will be a bit personal. The final monologue in GTA VI's Extended Look hit me differently.

I'm in my 40s now. I was a completely different person when GTA V came out. Different stage of life, different responsibilities, different everything.

More than a decade has passed, and somewhere along the way, waiting for the next GTA stopped feeling like simply waiting for another game.

It became a reminder of how quickly time moves.

It almost feels like Rockstar is speaking directly to those of us who have been playing these games for decades. A quiet reminder that we spend so much time waiting for the next big thing that we sometimes forget to appreciate it when it finally arrives.

And I'd be lying if I said GTA VI doesn't make me wonder how many more of these moments I'll get to experience. If another GTA takes 10 or 15 years, how old will I be when I see it? How different will my life look then? How many new Grand Theft Auto games do I realistically have left in my lifetime?

It's a strange thought, especially for those of us who remember when these games arrived every few years.

So when GTA VI finally comes out, I don't want to rush through it. I want to take my time. Explore Vice City. Get lost in the little things. Talk about it with friends. Enjoy that rare period when everything is still new and millions of us are discovering the same world together.

Because one day, GTA VI won't be the game we’re all waiting for anymore.

It'll be the game we remember waiting all those years for.
