In his new book George Saunders spends some time discussing whether literature boosts empathy, & is therefore a force for good. He begins in favour, then picks holes in his own position (he’s always careful to do this, which I admire), & then writes this wonderful passage:
@chris_power This is great, thanks. There's Adam Kirsch as well: “The idea that literature can, and should, be both politically virtuous and aesthetically challenging is one of those ideals that has so far enjoyed hardly a moment of historical realization.” And Bataille's Literature and Evil.
I wrote this lockdown story last March. Sad to see it’s still relevant. But very happy to see it published here. Thanks @partisanhotel and, of course, @DesperateLit
During lockdown I wrote a little story and it was shortlisted for this exciting prize sponsored by the Desperate Literature bookshop in Madrid. All the shortlisted stories have now been collected in a volume, which you can buy here. Vive la littérature!
