Team Report Numero Tres. After featuring two slower paced teams, I wanted to make a Tailwind Offense work. I was looking through Z-A Megas and realized that Eelektross is a good attacker when paired with speed control. The team is super strong.
The Team: https://t.co/aumFCl6hmg
Eelektross:
Eelektross stat distribution makes it a little worse than it could have been cause mixed attackers are not min-maxed as many other Pokémon such as Aerodactyl or Charizard. Nonetheless, it has some other things going for it. The coverage moves it gets are quite vast. It can hit any Pokémon for a lot of damage, depending on the moveset. The ability Eelevate is good cause it combines Beast Boost & Levitate in one. While some players tried out, a setup set with Coil, I believe that making use of its wide movepool and using it as a damage trader is the better approach. I settled on a special set cause of the option to run Flamethrower. Threatening Grass and Steel types is great. I settled on Close Combat as a 3rd attack which might seem redundant at first. However, a lot of boards (Ninetales/Talonflame/Gholdengo + Eelektross) would otherwise struggle quite a bit into Tyranitar. Close Combat is also the best move available to hit Archaludon, one of the few Pokémon that can take all the other moves in rain. Being able to do a lot of damage into Incineroar (without Intimidate) is a bonus. I figured that the best Nature would still be Modest since Close Combat is not one of the main moves to click and lowering your bulk is not appreciated. The speed stat allows Eelektross to outrun Choice Scarf Basculegion in Tailwind. The bulk is nice to survive a Wave Crash from NON damage boosting Basculegion (32+ Atk Adaptability Basculegion Wave Crash vs. 31 HP / 2 Def Mega Eelektross: 160-190 (83.7 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO) or a Weather Ball from most CharizardY (11+ SpA Mega Charizard Y Weather Ball (100 BP Fire) vs. 31 HP / 0 SpD Mega Eelektross in Sun: 160-190 (83.7 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO).
Talonflame:
The Tailwind setter of my choice is Talonflame. I was looking for priority Tailwind setters and had to choose between Whimsicot and Talonflame. While Whimsicott can threaten Dragon types such as Garchomp & Dragonite, I liked that Talonflame threatens Sneasler and Focus Sash Whimsicott for OHKOs with Sharp Beak Dual Wingbeat. The latter one is really good cause you don't want to play a game with Eelektross where both players have a Tailwind up. You would rather be the only player and this is why I settled on Talonflame with the Sharp Beak Dual Wingbeat set. Tailwind and Protect were set in stone pretty quickly and as last move I was debating between Quick Guard, Will-O-Wisp and Flare Blitz. I dropped Quick Guard after I added Tsareena to the team and settled on Flare Blitz ultimately, just so your main attackers can spam their best moves (Make It Rain, Thunderbolt, Blizzard) against steel types as well. The investment gives you a very good roll to knockout Whimsicott (28 Atk Sharp Beak Talonflame Dual Wingbeat (2 hits) vs. 2 HP / 0 Def Whimsicott: 132-160 (96.3 - 116.7%) -- 93.75% chance to OHKO). I figured that the speed stat of 190 is enough (outspeeding Sneasler & M-Froslass) since there are basically no common Pokémon in between. The bulk helps to take a Mystic Water Aqua Jet from Basculegion (32+ Atk Mystic Water Adaptability Basculegion Aqua Jet vs. 4 HP / 7 Def Talonflame: 136-160 (86.6 - 101.9%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO) & a Kowtow Cleave from Life Orb Kingambit (32+ Atk Life Orb Kingambit Kowtow Cleave vs. 4 HP / 7 Def Talonflame: 133-156 (84.7 - 99.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO).
Ninetales-Alola:
So far we have two Pokémon that can struggle into the common Dragon Types. The rain matchup looks quite rough as well, so I looked at Alolan Ninetales and added it to the team. That was a really good choice. There were a lot of games, I just started with Talonflame + Garchomp / Gholdengo and cleaned up with Ninetales + Eelektross. Freeze-Dry is great against Swampert and Pelipper but it also works against Basculegion, Milotic and Rotom-Wash. While Blizzard and Protect were givens, I could choose between Icy Wind, Aurora Veil, Encore or even Roar as a Anti Trick Room Strategy. Since I have another plan for Trick Room teams, Roar was not worth it. I rarely start with Ninetales and endgame does not have a great impact on this team. Icy Wind would definitely be nice but Encore enables more late game clean potential. Your opponent really wants to Protect to stall Tailwind turns but if you got Encore afterwards you can punish these defensive plays. There were also some other nice interactions such as locking Metagross into Meteor Mash, so that Eelektross did not have to worry about a strong Psychic Fangs. While Never-Melt-Ice would be nice to have, Focus Sash is just far too important to get an extra attack off.
Garchomp:
With 2 Pokémon immune to Earthquake, it would make sense to add a ground type. Garchomp is a good choice. It's typing is also very good when paired with Gholdengo (which we will talk about in a bit) cause Gholdengo removes the Fairy Types while Garchomp deals with the Fire & Steel Types. While a Life Orb set was tempting, I instead wanted to go for a Sitrus Berry set to have some defensive backbone on the team. Sitrus Berry Garchomp is able to stay on the field for a little longer. I also considered Roseli Berry but Sitrus seemed more appealing. By not running Life Orb, I can invest some of my points into bulk as well. Surviving +2 Black Glasses Sucker Punch from Kingambit (+2 32+ Atk Black Glasses Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 13 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 169-199 (86.2 - 101.5%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO), Mystic Water Wave Crash from Basculegion (32+ Atk Mystic Water Adaptability Basculegion Wave Crash vs. 13 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 170-202 (86.7 - 103%) -- 18.75% chance to OHKO) & Timid Dazzling Gleam from Floette (32 SpA Fairy Aura Mega Floette Dazzling Gleam vs. 13 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 176-210 (89.7 - 107.1%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO) most of the time was quite appealing. Since this Garchomp was staying on the field quite a bit, I decided to run Rock Tomb over Rock Slide. This gives me an edge if both or no player sets Tailwind. I also wanted to get around CharizardY + Wide Guard. I settled on Max Speed since there are a lot of opposing Garchomp & Floette doing the same, so speed tying those at least made total sense to me. I put the remaining points into Attack to deal as much damage as possible and threaten KOs on glass Charizard (21 Atk Garchomp Rock Tomb vs. 0 HP / 2 Def Mega Charizard Y: 156-188 (101.9 - 122.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO).
Gholdengo:
Gholdengo is my second Regulation M-B Pokémon. It's nothing new that Gholdengo is quite a strong Tailwind attacker. Being immune to Fake Out and access to a strong spread move is very valuable. Since Garchomp is holding the Sitrus Berry, the Life Orb was free and Gholdengo really likes that. It's almost impossible to get a turn to setup Nasty Plot. Power Gem helps a lot to chunk Incineroar since the first 4 Pokémon can all struggle a bit into it. Threatening an OHKO on Charizard is HUGE when leading with Talonflame & Gholdengo. Gholdengo is also here to keep the Fairy Types (Sylveon & Floette) in check which helps out both Garchomp & Eelektross. Modest Nature is needed to get the bit of extra damage against Floette (27+ SpA Life Orb Gholdengo Make It Rain vs. 1 HP / 1 SpD Mega Floette: 151-182 (100.6 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO) & Delphox (27+ SpA Life Orb Gholdengo Shadow Ball vs. 13 HP / 0 SpD Mega Delphox: 164-195 (100.6 - 119.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO). I maxed out the speed stat to outspeed Adamant Basculegion & a few others in the range (some Charizard, Jolly M-Tyranitar, opposing Gholdengo). If you think, I put the 7 points into HP to optimize Life Orb recoil, that is not the case. Also, this is not how optimizing works at all 😭 I instead wanted to survive a Heat Wave from Delphox which swings the Delphox Balance matchup from close to undoable to okayish (32 SpA Mega Delphox Heat Wave vs. 7 HP / 0 SpD Gholdengo: 152-182 (89.9 - 107.6%) -- 43.75% chance to OHKO). Most of them are 19 or 17 SpAtk, making it impossible to get the KO on Gholdengo. You also survive Sucker Punch from Kingambit which lets you attack their partner or put them into range of Flare Blitz from Talonflame (the double up is a roll) (32+ Atk Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 7 HP / 0 Def Gholdengo: 140-168 (82.8 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO).
Tsareena:
With 5 fast Pokémon and almost no defense, Trick Room matchups seem very rough. That was until I discovered Taunt Tsareena. Mental Herb usage is very low right now which makes this set quite good at denying Trick Room once (which is mostly enough to break through). The Hard Trick Room matchup is also the reason for the Occa Berry. Some of those teams have a CharizardY. Being able to take a Heat Wave or Weather Ball most of the time (11+ SpA Mega Charizard Y Weather Ball (100 BP Fire) vs. 23 HP / 0 SpD Occa Berry Tsareena in Sun: 150-177 (88.2 - 104.1%) -- 25% chance to OHKO) is very important. The Occa Berry also helps against Incineroar since Tsareena can also be brought against those Double Fake Out teams. The bulk also lets it survive Dire Claw from Sneasler which is the secondary Pokémon you really want to block the Fake Out against (32 Atk Sneasler Dire Claw vs. 23 HP / 1 Def Tsareena: 138-164 (81.1 - 96.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). I decided to go for enough speed to outrun M-Aerodactyl in Tailwind as well as most Swampert and Archaludon since rain is another matchup Tsareena can be brought. That leaves it with enough attack to knockout Kingambit most of the time (21+ Atk Tsareena Low Kick (100 BP) vs. 32 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 192-228 (92.7 - 110.1%) -- 56.25% chance to OHKO). This calc is also really nice (21+ Atk Tsareena Trop Kick vs. 1 HP / 1 Def Basculegion: 198-234 (101 - 119.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO). Other than running Taunt, I was quite insecure about the attacking moves. I liked Low Kick cause that way Gholdengo + Tsareena matches up well into Kingambit. It is also the best move into Archaludon & Incineroar (I ain't running High Jump Kick), so it was added to the moveset quickly. Having another Pokémon removing Garchomp is very appreciated for Eelektross, so I figured Triple Axel might not be a bad idea. It lets Tsareena hit opposing Grass types as well such as Sinistcha or Whimsicot. Lastly, I wanted to run a STAB move to remove Swampert from play. Power Whip is nice for extra damage but Trop Kick helps for sustain as well as being 100% accurate. Also, since Tsareena is mainly made for the Hard Trick Room matchup I should give this one to you as well (32+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Play Rough vs. 23 HP / 1 Def Tsareena: 147-174 (86.4 - 102.3%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO).
Matchups:
vs ZardY Standard - It can feel like Lead roulette sometimes. If they lead Charizard, you want to start Garchomp. If they start with Floette, you want to have Gholdengo instead. Gholdengo into Charizard is not terrible however but worse against Garchomp leads. I usually just go with feeling and lead Talonflame with either Garchomp or Gholdengo. Both have felt equally good. Ninetales and Eelektross in the back to close the endgame.
vs Hard Trick Room - Tsareena is the main weapon and should be led. It depends on the other pieces of the Trick Room team. If they have Maushold, your Tsareena is threatened by Population Bomb. You need to bring Garchomp in the back and keep Maushold alive the turn they set Trick Room. Non Maushold versions usually struggle against Gholdengo + Tsareena with Ninetales Eelektross backline.
vs Rain - Rain feels very good. I usually lead with Gholdengo and Tsareena. Gholdengo shuts down a lot of Rain pieces other than Swampert while Tsareena threatens it quite a lot. Ninetales is a great Pokémon to have in the back for winning the weather war and Eelektross hits all Pokémon other than Swampert for tons of damage. With Freeze-Dry and Trop Kick next to your main attackers, I never really struggled in this matchup.
Conclusion:
Very fun team. Quick Games, quick wins. Eelektross did a lot in my games, so the showcase is a success. I still do not think that Eelektross is going to be a meta staple. However, it is very fun to play, especially if you are able to Snowball with Eelevate. I think Coil & Discharge sets are both too weak but I'm gladly proven wrong.
