Rotherham Titans were crowned National 1 champions and sealed a long-awaited return to the Championship with a dramatic 34–26 victory over Sale FC on a glorious afternoon at Clifton Lane.
Backed by a large and expectant crowd, the South Yorkshire side delivered a performance full of resilience, composure and attacking quality to confirm promotion after an eight-year absence from level two of the English game.
Knowing that just a single point would be enough to clinch the title, there was no sense of complacency from the hosts—only determination to finish the job in style against a Sale side renowned for their competitiveness.
The visitors from Heywood Road proved every bit as stubborn as anticipated, pushing Titans all the way in a fiercely contested encounter that remained in doubt until the very final moments. Yet, when it mattered most, Rotherham Titans found the decisive edge.
Rotherham began the contest with purpose and intensity, quickly asserting themselves in the opening exchanges. Their early pressure paid dividends as winger Jackson Barling crossed for the first of his three tries, igniting the Clifton Lane crowd. The wide man was in electric form, combining pace with sharp finishing to trouble the Sale defence throughout the afternoon.
Barling’s second try soon followed, capping a flowing move and not only extending the Titans’ lead but also writing his name into the club’s history books. The winger’s brace took him beyond Michael Wood’s long-standing record of 22 tries in a single season, set during the 2002/03 campaign—a remarkable individual milestone achieved on the biggest stage of the year.
Further first-half joy came through the ever-reliable John Okafor, who powered over for what has become something of a trademark big-game try. His score ensured Rotherham held firm control heading into the break, with Sale’s only reply in the half coming from their captain Andy Hughes.
Despite the hosts’ strong first-half showing, the contest was far from settled. Sale emerged after the interval with renewed intent, demonstrating exactly why they have been one of the division’s most respected sides this season. Their forward pack began to gain traction, and the momentum gradually shifted.
Hooker Nathan Langdon crossed to bring the visitors back into contention, before winger Nev Edwards finished smartly out wide to narrow the deficit further. Suddenly, what had seemed a comfortable afternoon for the Titans turned into a tense and nervy affair, with the scoreboard reading 22–19 and less than fifteen minutes remaining.
With promotion still hanging in the balance, the atmosphere inside Clifton Lane grew increasingly anxious. But once again, Barling rose to the occasion. Seizing his opportunity out wide, he completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish that ultimately proved decisive—not just in the match, but in securing the title itself.
Even then, there was late drama to come. Sale refused to go quietly, and Hughes grabbed his second try of the game to secure a bonus point and reduce the deficit to a single point at 27–26 with just minutes remaining. The tension was palpable as the visitors pressed for a potentially season-defining score of their own.
However, deep into injury time, Rotherham delivered the final, emphatic blow. Xavier Valentine crashed over from close range following sustained pressure, sending the home crowd into raptures and putting the result beyond doubt. Lloyd Hayes added the conversion, and moments later the referee brought proceedings to a close.

𝙏𝙄𝙏𝘼𝙉𝙎 𝙎𝙀𝘼𝙇 𝘿𝙍𝘼𝙈𝘼𝙏𝙄𝘾 𝙇𝘼𝙎𝙏 𝙆𝙄𝘾𝙆 𝙒𝙄𝙉 𝙊𝙑𝙀𝙍 𝘼𝙇𝘽𝙄𝙊𝙉:
A thrilling top-of-the-table clash in National League 1 lived up to its billing as Rotherham Titans edged out @Albion_RFC 22–19 in dramatic fashion at Clifton Lane.
With the scores locked at 19-19 the match was settled in the final play when Titans fly half Lloyd Hayes nailed a 25 metre drop goal in front of the clubhouse end to send the bumper crowd into raptures.
The win keeps Rotherham at the summit of Nat 1, but with three games remaining there’s still lots of rugby to be played before the seasons end.
Played in bright sunshine, the contest between first and second was as tight as expected, with momentum swinging throughout before being settled by a moment of individual brilliance.
It was the visitors who struck first, as fly-half Iwan Jenkins demonstrated his accuracy from the tee with long-range penalties on 16 and 23 minutes to give Plymouth an early 6–0 lead.
The away side extended their advantage on 29 minutes in opportunistic fashion. A charge down inside the Rotherham 22 fell kindly for Joel Broadhurst, who reacted quickest to touch down and push Albion further ahead.
Rotherham responded strongly before the break. Sustained pressure and powerful wing play created the opening for Jackson Barling, who crossed on 34 minutes to get Rotherham on the board and keep them within touching distance at half-time.
Rotherham came out for the second half with renewed intensity, and their forward dominance soon paid dividends.
After relentless pressure near the Plymouth line, the referee awarded a penalty try on 49 minutes as the visitors’ defence finally gave away ‘one too many’ penalties under the severest of Titans pressure, bringing the hosts right back into contention.
However, Plymouth regrouped and reasserted control through the reliable boot of Jenkins, who slotted further penalties on 55 and 60 minutes to stretch the lead back out to seven points.
The league leaders refused to fade however and on 65 minutes, Xavier Valentine finished off a powerful drive and Isaac Shaw added the conversion to level the scores and set up a grandstand finish.
With the clock winding down, Rotherham launched a breathtaking counterattack from deep within their own half. Shaw nearly capped it with a spectacular try, only to be stopped just short inside the Albion 22.
From the ensuing phases, Rotherham kept their composure. As the final seconds ticked away, scrum-half JB Bruzulier fed Lloyd Hayes, positioned perfectly in the pocket.
Hayes delivered under immense pressure, striking a flawless drop goal that sailed straight through the uprights. The final whistle followed immediately, sealing a remarkable 22–19 victory and sending the Clifton Lane crowd into raptures.
In a match worthy of its top-of-the-table status, Rotherham showed resilience, power, and composure when it mattered most. Plymouth Albion will rue missed opportunities, but it was Hayes’ moment of magic that ultimately decided a gripping encounter.

The Coldstream Guards Band performed Black Sabbath's masterpiece Paranoid outside of Buckingham Palace as a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne on the day of his funeral. Don't let anybody tell you this isn't a great country.
