@Fergus_NBlair I thought Lewisham had stopped doing overnight counts. Do you know whether the policy on that has changed, or whether this is just an exception for the by-election?
@psymonbee@golden_peggy@nytimes You're right about power and status, but the conventional label for the Lords is the upper house, despite it having less power than the Commons.
(An upper house being legislatively weaker is the norm in parliamentary systems, with a few exceptions such as Australia.)
@juliablackcat13@MrDazzaThomas@Jackda_techguy@Yuchenj_UW@tim_cook@AppleTV I should add to this that none of that is conclusive evidence that the image isn't the product of GenAI. My initial reaction when looking at it was that it seemed to be, but the context suggests it might not be. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@juliablackcat13@MrDazzaThomas@Jackda_techguy@Yuchenj_UW@tim_cook According to the quote tweet from @AppleTV (https://t.co/tTr6DfQCLP), it's by an artist called Keith Thomson. I've just compared the signature in the bottom left to that visible on paintings displayed on his website, and it does seem to match.

@mikeysmith@AppleTV It's odd, because from just looking at the image, there are a number of things that strike me as potentially signs of GenAI. (The maze, the bright light and the general vibe.) But all of that context makes it seem like that's not super likely.

@eddydan777@IGN The workers were fired from Rockstar North, in Scotland, which is in the UK. The allegation that 31 workers were fired as part of union busting is a serious one that deserves investigation.
In doing this, he is addressing an issue in the UK, making your reply contradictory.
@BombyWhat@IGN The workers were fired from Rockstar North, based in Scotland, which is in the UK. Allegations that the termination of 31 workers was union busting are serious enough to warrant investigation.
In pursuing this issue, he is therefore investigating a problem in the UK.
@AnalyticsGenius@sam_d_1995 Surely the solution is ultimately to build more railway lines so you have a station within walking distance, no?
(Of course, you'll also need the pedestrian infrastructure to make that possible as well!)
@NIMBYSlayer_69@PushTheSutton I will just say that I think the 2020 US Election provides pretty good evidence for the argument(s) Tom Scott makes. Was the electronic voting the cause of the distrust/conspiracy theories? No. Was it a contributing factor? Yes, indisputably so.
Anyway, goodnight!
@NIMBYSlayer_69@PushTheSutton Ooh, I'm afraid I strongly disagree. It's one of those subjects I revisit and reevaluate my position on every couple of year or so, so have strong views.
That said, I need to get to bed, so will just leave you with this, in case you're interested: https://t.co/TZAeUgf9Vf
@NIMBYSlayer_69@PushTheSutton For instance, election data seems to be more accessible in some other countries than it is here.
Maybe due to the unitary nature of our system, meaning devolution occurs in a sort of ad hoc manner and is less well-defined/structured than elsewhere?!
@PushTheSutton@NIMBYSlayer_69 Tbh, but I'm not even sure about the statement 'The British state is institutionally shit with data'. There are plenty of issues, but our digital government stuff is actually pretty well-regarded internationally.
Happy to be corrected on either counts!
@PushTheSutton@NIMBYSlayer_69 Hm, is the British government uniquely 'shit with data' in a European context? From my understanding, we're better at it than the French, and I've heard of similar issues in Germany to the ones we have here. (Both of which have digital ID cards.)
@GreenPartyFinn Just want to make clear that we're on the same side here. Maybe the amplifying and humanising effect the photo may have outweighs the risk of allowing the government to whitewash his treatment. I genuinely don't know. But the photo feels a bit uncomfortably propaganda-ry.
@GreenPartyFinn @beatmastermatt@ChrisVanHollen I'd encourage you to read the NYT article. To me, the El Salvadorian government's comments in it make it quite clear why they wanted this photo taken and publicised.
