Or saying seatbelt laws conflict with her personal beliefs, so transport staff need not follow them.

We would rightly consider that extraordinary.

Yet Hackney’s Green mayor, Zoë Garbett, has said men who identify as women may continue using women’s facilities - and instructed council staff not to “police access”.

Earlier this month, Greater Manchester mayor Bev Craig refused to commit to implementing the new EHRC code on single-sex services.

Politicians are entitled to oppose laws and campaign to change them. But they are not entitled to treat legal obligations conflicting with their personal ideology as optional.

These are not unpaid activists. Garbett receives around £89,000 a year in public money. Craig receives around £118,000 and oversees transport, policing and fire services across Greater Manchester.

If elected mayors are prepared to disregard a statutory code reflecting a Supreme Court ruling, what other legal obligations might they decide not to follow?

And why are neither being held to account?

The Galway breast-feeding conference will be hosted by the HSE-funded Association of Lactation Consultants in Ireland.

This response - over on my Facebook page - is wildly disproportionate.

If even mild criticism of Pride provokes this level of rage, abuse and intimidation towards a woman, doesn’t that itself make you stop and think?

Why are people so determined to defend everything displayed at these events, which take place in public spaces and on high streets during the daytime?

And why are reasonable questions branded “offensive” instead of answered?
