A Jordanian man who falsely claimed to be a Syrian asylum seeker has been jailed for a violent sex attack, during which he repeatedly bit a woman on her mouth just minutes from her home in South Dublin.

Saif Waleed Al Hindawi claimed that he was intoxicated after his first time drinking and said that he was from a culture where the use of alcohol is not prevalent. The defendant, who also claimed that his victim had hit him first, was today jailed for three and a half years.

The court heard that he refused to be tested for infectious diseases after his arrest, which meant that the victim had to wait a number of months to find out whether she had contracted anything from him after he bit her.

The victim told Dublin Circuit Criminal Court today that she now lives in constant fear of being attacked.

“The women of my community no longer feel safe to walk our streets alone,” she said. “This freedom, this right has been taken away from us.”
