Last month I announced the first increase in HMRC mileage rates since 2011.
It was great to hear from @AndreaEganGS and @unisontheunion members today about the positive difference this change will make for many working people.
Great to meet chancellor @RachelReevesMP at No. 11 with our members and @AndreaEganGS
Staff using their own cars for work have been out of pocket for years. After sustained UNISON campaigning, that’s been heard—delivering vital support for workers.

This has been a longstanding @unisontheunion campaign so I’m delighted @RachelReevesMP has been the Chancellor to deliver it ✅
The trade union movement and a @UKLabour government delivering again for workers 🌹
It’s hugely welcome that the Chancellor is lifting mileage rates – a longstanding UNISON demand and something I raised with her in our latest meeting.
Frozen rates were punishing workers just going about their jobs.
Now we need urgent action to drive wages up and bills down.
NEWS: The work mileage allowance for under 10,000 miles will rise by 10p to 55p backdated to April 2026.
So this means if you drive for work in your own car (like many care workers for example) you can be given up to 55p a mile tax and NI free. And if you're not given that level you can claim the tax back on the difference between what you're given and that amount
Eg so if you're given 30p /mile. You can reclaim tax paid on your wages for the 25p/mile difference.
Mileage rate rise from HMRC is a win for workers — won by our members.
“UNISON has campaigned hard for this long overdue change,” Andrea Egan, UNISON GS
“Workers who use their own cars to do their job have been left thousands of pounds out of pocket for far too many years”.
Said YES to playing for🏴 again—so now its puzzle rush, opening & endgame time!

🚨 NEW: Rachel Reeves is set to announce an increase in mileage rates later today
Workers using their own car for business currently receive 45p per mile from their employers
