Principles for Orthodox apologetics.
1 - Before anything, revere God in your heart. This involves prayer, attending services, and seeking God with all your heart. This is only found on your knees in prayer.
2 - Be prepared.
For Protestants this "preparation" centers around knowing the Bible very well. If you are going to debate a Sola Scriptura person you need to be prepared to answer them on their terms - from Scripture, not tradition. And Scripture supports Orthodoxy because it came out of the Church.
But the Bible also tells us that we are not to prepare a defense in advance.
Luk 21:14-15 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.
This means we are to be guided by the Spirit.
3 - When apologetics is done right, it's done with ""gentleness and respect". Pride and arrogance are the downfall for all of us.
Talking over the other person is one evidence you are not acting with respect. The other person is allowed to be rude. The Orthodox Christian is not. They are allowed to be arrogant. The Orthodox Christian is not.

Blessed Theophylact of Ohrid's commentary on Philippians 2:6-8 distills the classical Eastern Orthodox patristic consensus—heavily drawing from St. John Chrysostom—to defend Christ's full divinity and voluntary humanity against ancient heresies.
Here is the breakdown of his verse-by-verse explanation:
1. The Form of God (Verse 6)
• Definition of "Form": Theophylact explicitly states that "the form of God signifies His essence" (ousia). Just as the "form of a servant" refers to a true human nature, the "form of God" denotes Christ's unalterable, eternal divine nature, not a temporary or superficial appearance.
• True Equality: Christ possesses full equality with God the Father because He shares the same divine nature.
2. "Thought it Not Robbery" (Verse 6)
• The Usurper Analogy: Theophylact explains the Greek term harpagmos ("robbery" or "a thing to be grasped") using a vivid analogy of power. When a person unlawfully seizes a throne through robbery or a coup, they cling to that power anxiously and refuse to hide or yield it, fearing they will lose what isn't rightfully theirs.
• Christ's Sovereignty: Because Christ's equality with God was inherently His by nature and not stolen, He felt no modern insecurity or need to aggressively project His divine majesty. He knew His divinity could never be taken away, which allowed Him to freely conceal His glory and adopt a humble status for human redemption.
3. Emptied Himself & The Form of a Servant (Verse 7)
• No Loss of Deity: The "self-emptying" (kenosis) does not mean Christ shed His divine nature or ceased to be God. God is immutable.
• Addition, Not Subtraction: Rather than losing His divinity, Christ hid His glory by adding a true human nature. By taking the "form of a servant," He truly became a man, taking on genuine human conditions like fatigue, hunger, and mortality.
4. Humbled Himself unto Death (Verse 8)
• Voluntary Submission: Theophylact emphasizes that Christ's descent into human form was entirely voluntary. No external power forced Him; He chose to humble Himself out of love.
• The Ultimate Lowliness: For the Creator of the universe to become a man was an immense degradation, but to suffer the most shameful criminal death of that era—death on a cross—was the absolute apex of humility.
Pastoral Application
Theophylact emphasizes that St. Paul provides this theological reality as an ethical pattern for believers. If the naturally supreme Sovereign of the cosmos willingly gave up His rights and structural advantages to serve humanity, Christians must actively lay aside selfish ambitions and pride to serve one another.

As I sit here today, signing more than 600 books, I can’t help but stop and think about how incredible God’s plans are.
If someone had told me a few years ago that I would one day write a book, I would never have believed them. And yet, here I am, sitting at my publisher’s home in America, signing hundreds of copies of Boots on the Ground that will soon be making their way to many of you!
What makes this moment even more meaningful is knowing the challenging times we have walked through in Israel. Once again, God is showing me that even in the midst of hardship, He is opening doors we could never have imagined, creating new opportunities to share His faithfulness with the world.
All the glory belongs to God! 🙌
My prayer is that every book that goes out will encourage someone, strengthen their faith, and remind them that our God is still working miracles today!
If you want to discover some of the incredible miracles God is doing in Israel, even in the midst of war, I invite you to read my book, Boots on the Ground.
