When I talk about the importance of granting students accommodations WITHOUT relying on formal paperwork this is why it matters. It is DANGEROUS for some people to have diagnoses on their medical records. 1/3
This new DOJ report does list limiting "restrictive housing" (solitary confinement) as one way to reduce suicides in the federal Bureau of Prisons--which currently holds more people in solitary than any other prison system. https://t.co/eofP8QQTuF
Dehumanization is not simply a side effect of incarceration: It is intentional and has been a part of prisons in the US since the first brick was laid.
That's why advocates in Virginia at @HumanizationPro are fighting to humanize those behind bars & drive policy change.
ADHD saturates the American prison system. While only 4.4 percent of the general public has ADHD, as many as half of adult prisoners and two-thirds of children in juvenile facilities have the condition. Yet no state in the country prioritizes ADHD treatment in its prisons. [1/2]
There is something huge happening in the prison industry and no one appears to be paying attention: the correctional healthcare sector is collapsing. THREAD

For suicide & deaths linked to drugs or alcohol, the first few days in jail are the deadliest.
Pretrial detention is not “tough medicine.” It can cause immense harm – something judges tragically and systematically ignore when deciding whether to release or detain someone.
Meant to post this a few weeks ago, but life has been busy! I started this paper when in my first year of my PhD & it’s finally out!

On any given day, more than 50,000 people are in solitary confinement – a practice that literally shrinks the brain and leads to permanent damage.

Missouri will begin banning friends & family from sending books to incarcerated people next month. This will only work to benefit the prison telecom industry, which charges exorbitant rates for books on tablets.
