A week before the big one away to Aylesbury United, Bobby Robson’s England played a meaningless Euro 88 warm-up friendly in Switzerland.

A 1-0 win, courtesy of the only goal from Gary Lineker, saw him and Peter Beardsley linking up beautifully, and everything appeared to be set fair for a glorious summer in West Germany.

@ChrisSmith521 Thanks for your reply Chris. Should have made it clear, the cheating accusation is against club ARs, when I Ref in parks. The fitness testing for the Refs at your games is quite extensive already, not sure why the Referee’s positioning was poor.

@ChrisSmith521 From my experience, clubs at the lower reaches of the steps know that having a neutral assistant is far preferable to having club assistants. I love refereeing but it’s a constant row about the perception of club ARs ‘cheating’

@ChrisSmith521 I run the line at step 6. I give it my best. We surely won’t find enough people with that level of fitness that won’t want to go higher? Fees cover things like kit+boots so Refs aren’t out of pocket. I go to work for a salary, I don’t do football for the money
