THESE OUR MONSTERS AND OTHER STORIES is an anthology that wonderfully reimagines British myths in fresh, often darkly humorous ways. A variety of notable authors have penned some marvellous stuff here.
Try to imagine ancient British folklore meeting the present day, and it may prove if nothing else, that our legends may sometimes age like a fine cheese — pungent, layered, and sometimes a little hard to digest. Each author breathes new life into tales of goblins, giants, and cursed landscapes as if trying to settle a debate I constantly have with myself: Can mythical beasts and legends of old survive on social media?
The stories are infused with sly humour and a gentle wink toward our own modern quirks. From eerie to absurd, these monsters remind us that myth and legend can lurk in our own stories, maybe in our everyday lives. More than we realise. With this anthology, you’ll laugh, you’ll shiver, and you’ll maybe start to wonder if those odd bumps in the night are just the ghost of an ancient legend checking out modern life who has no interest in communicating with you.
For anyone who wants a creepy, dark read about eerie folklore that may put a smile on your face, this collection is a perfect bedtime read—that is if you don’t mind a few monsters under the bed.
The book is available now from bookshops, bookstores, and booksellers. Please support indie bookstores if you can.

@danny_robins Chris Carter, The Death Watcher! His work is brilliant and he is a Criminal Behaviour psychologist too so everything he has written is inspired by true events
My current read at the moment! Absolutely hooked on this … highly recommended, brilliantly written and in depth of how investigating work goes! #Thedeathwatcher#chriscarter#roberthunter
Haunted Magazine issue 43 will be out in selected UK shops on September 3rd and will soon be available to pre-order online for the UK, USA, Australia, and worldwide. UK pre-orders, new and existing subscribers should get their copies a day or two before the shops [if the Postal Gods aren't sunbathing]. We'll drop the cover reveal and all pre-order links soon, but I just wanted to tell you about this issue.
Regular readers of Haunted will know that, on average, 50-70% of our features are mostly written by women. We've always prided ourselves on giving a voice to anyone and everyone in the paranormal, regardless of age, experience, class, gender, status, or belief. The paranormal is for all those who choose to be interested in it.
Issue 43 will be a Women in the Paranormal issue, as in all the features will be written by women. There's a fantastic mix of features and articles from some of the good and great in the paranormal.
Andy and I are busily shaping, flat planning, designing and putting the issue together, and the writers [as per usual] have just put together the most wonderful paranormal features. As well as the usual mix, there are new writers, unpublished writers, first-time writers and writers from all over the world, but they all have one thing in common, they get what the mag is all about: a magazine about the paranormal for sceptics, believers, inbetweeners or those who just want to soak up the wonder and mystery of all things spooky and supernatural.
As usual, the synchronicity of some of the features is, if I may say so, 'spooky.' You'll be reading a feature and thinking, 'Where have I heard that name or that expression before?' It will probably be from a different writer writing about a different part of the paranormal, but the words and the people mentioned are somehow linked. It happens with a few features in most issues, and I love it.
We published a similar Women in the Paranormal issue in 2016 and thought it was high time we did it again. A lot has changed in the world in those eight years; some of it good, some of it bad, some of it positive and some of it negative.
I'll say more about the new issue and the writers in another post, but I wanted to just take a moment, if I may, to talk about why women seem to be, and sometimes feel like they are, underrepresented in the paranormal field.
Let's be honest here: This is not a new thing; it has been going on for centuries. I do like to think and hope that it is getting better and that more and more women are being listened to and given the time, space, and platform to have a voice, an opinion, and a say, and because of that, they are feeling more and more confident about doing so.
There are probably several reasons why this happens, many of which are interconnected with broader trends and issues in society in general, but I want to concentrate on the paranormal side of it and just mention a few points as to why it may happen.
Historical Gender Roles: Traditionally, fields like science, investigation, and the supernatural have been male-dominated. This historical bias has led to fewer women being recognised or encouraged to participate in these areas. Some achievements have been erased from history, or their roles and achievements are portrayed wrongly, or their claims and evidence are piggybacked and used by others.
Visibility and Recognition: Women in the paranormal field may not receive the same level of visibility, media representation or recognition as their male counterparts. This can be due to biases in all kinds of media coverage, TV, publishing, and conference speaking opportunities. This lack of visibility could also lead to the absence of prominent female figures in the paranormal field, which can make it difficult for aspiring women to envision themselves in similar roles as role models are sometimes crucial for inspiring and guiding new generations.
Bias and Scepticism: Women in the paranormal field might face more scepticism and bias about their findings and the credibility of their evidence. This additional scrutiny can potentially discourage participation and put people off from doing and saying more. It can even perpetuate the awful misogynistic stereotypical myth that the paranormal field is not, and should not be, for women.
As I said before, there are lots of factors as to why, but from my experience, having been around the paranormal over the last decade or so, I can see a change and I hope that by listening to others, learning from others, and educating ourselves I really do like to think, believe, and hope that it will continue to get better.
Let's be clear, I am no analyst, ologist, or expert, but I'd like to think we can all continue to help promote diversity and inclusion in life in general, in the media, on social media, and in the paranormal and provide equal opportunities for recognition and participation while trying our best to support all in the paranormal field, and treat all with respect and humility cos the paranormal is full of some wonderful people with different opinions and takes and views and thoughts on the subjects within it but if we can discuss, debate and disagree without the need to be rude, aggressive and angry then surely that's so much better.
Thank you for taking the time to read. I will update you more about Haunted #issue43 over the coming days, including the cover reveal, pre-order links, the writers etc. Please feel free to comment, like, or repost—do what you have to do. We may all come from different backgrounds, life experiences, situations, and viewpoints, but we're all in this together.
