'It is no surprise that without doctors care can't continue... that is the point we are trying to make.'
@RobLaurensonD4P of the BMA responds to Rishi Sunak's claims that NHS strikes are the reason behind rising patient waiting lists.
'We're asking for our pay to be restored back to what we were worth in 2008, and that's fair and reasonable.'
The BMA's @RobLaurensonD4P, tells @ShelaghFogarty his 'jaw dropped' when he heard Rishi Sunak discussing the NHS with @NickFerrariLBC this morning.
NEW: we need to talk about NHS staff retention.
At a time when Britain’s healthcare system is acutely short of workers, *1 in 7* UK-trained doctors are practising overseas. No other developed country is like this, which immediately tells you there’s a problem.
Let’s dig deeper:
A reminder that corporate profiteering is the single biggest cause of rising inflation across Europe, according to the IMF.
Instead of telling workers to pay the price, how about taxing the profiteers?
To understand the medical brain drain from UK to Oz, look at my🇦🇺 fellowship payslip.
Fortnightly salary = 12470 AUD = 6528 GBP.
= £170 000 per annum as a trainee.
UK consultant salary = £88 000 p.a.
We will lose our best doctors from the UK if we don’t fix this.
Thanks @5_News@catherine5news for the credit & excellent report - much more balanced reporting of the figures than Ive seen elsewhere in the media today!
1. Tomorrow i will be supporting the NHS #ConsultantsStrike
About Me:
➡️ I am a cardiology consultant / professor @UHNM_NHS
➡️ i was from a working class background, i went to a state comprehensive. My dad left school at 16, mum at 12. I am the first / only member of my family to receive a higher education. I received a student grant to go to @UniofOxford. I left med school with little debt.
I could not afford to train as a doctor now.
I don’t understand how @RishiSunak isn’t embarrassed.
Waiting list grew by 4.7m from 2010 to March 2023 (when we began IA).
They have grown by a further 0.3m since.
It’s like blaming a defeat on a striker missing a last-minute penalty when you’re already 15-0 down ⚽️
We can answer this one @WesStreeting: you'll see from this letter that Steve Barclay has only met with Consultants once in 7 months. He's also only met the junior doctors three times. It's time for @SteveBarclay to get serious and start properly negotiating.
⏬ @PeterStefanovi2 & how Junior Doctors and all of us are being bullied by a govt which seems out of any semblance of control or respect for our population @BMA_JuniorDocs
The longest NHS strike in history continues
A strike that didn’t need to go ahead
But unfortunately our government is belligerent and ideological
Doctors have had pay cut by more than 31% in real terms since 2008
All we want, is go back to neutral, net zero to ‘08
1/ VITAL🧵 So people have had a couple of days to digest the DDRBs "independent" reports & their imposition by governemnt.
TLDR;they represent further MASSIVE pay cuts.
Lets start with some history and look at what happened BEFORE the current high inflation
Pls read all/RT
'They wasted £4bn on PPE that had to be burnt, they wasted £37bn on a test and trace system that did not work...'
The government can clearly afford to meet doctors' pay demands, this medic tells @ShelaghFogarty, adding the 6% pay offer is 'insulting'.
Tory MP admits the government "basically rigs" the DDRB and other 'independent' pay review bodies.
We know. That's why we lost confidence in them. That's why we stopped wasting our time.
Get into negotiations for #PayRestoration
