Amazon cancelled the new Stargate show.

The rumor is that the show writer, Martin Gero, would not budge on compromising lore or elements within the show for a "wider modern audience" as they did with Rings of Power for LoTR lore.

Martin Gero wanted to create a show that maintained continuity in the story and lore of the old shows, including the mythology and tech, while respecting the 17 seasons of history.

Amazon instead wanted something new for the "modern audience" that's more accessible, reimagined, with more modern casual sensibilities.

Because the showrunners wanted to maintain integrity rather than turn Stargate into another "modern audience slop" like Rings of Power, Amazon leadership canceled it. The franchise heavyweight, like Joseph Mallozzi, was very excited for the fresh stories Gero worked on. Amazon says they are still open to Stargate, just not "this" version... yes they wanted to Rings of Powerify Stargate.

We really can't hate these people enough.

This might be hard to believe, but many Japanese people hesitate to cut their fingernails after dark.

There is an old saying: "If you cut your nails at night, you won't be at your parent's deathbed."
In Japan, being present at a parent's death, holding that final moment, is considered deeply important. To miss it is one of the saddest things imaginable.
Most people hear this warning as children. No one explains it. You just quietly obey.

So where does it come from? Probably a pun.
In Japanese, cutting your nails at night is "yozume."
And "yo wo tsumeru," meaning to shorten your own life, sounds almost identical.
That is the whole origin. A play on similar sounds.

There is another theory, a practical one.
Centuries ago there were no nail clippers. People trimmed their nails with small knives or blades.
Do that by dim lamplight at night, your hand slips, and you cut yourself.
An infected wound back then could kill you. So the elders simply said: don't do it after dark.

Now, a second gesture.
When a hearse, the car that carries a coffin and the body of the dead, drives past on the street, many Japanese people quietly tuck their thumb inside their fist and hide it.
You will see grown adults do this without even thinking.

Why the thumb?
In old Japanese belief, the thumb was the gateway through which the soul enters and leaves the body.
By hiding it, you stop the spirit of the dead from slipping inside you.
And there is a second reason hidden in the language.
The Japanese word for thumb is "oya-yubi." The first part, "oya," is the exact word for parent.
So the thumb literally means "parent finger." Leave it exposed near death, the saying goes, and your parents will die young.

Here is the quiet thing.
Cutting your nails at night, and seeing a hearse, lead to the very same fear.
That you will lose your parents, or fail to be there when they go.

There is no scientific basis for any of it. None.
And yet these little gestures refuse to die out.
Underneath them is the same simple wish.
I do not want to die before my parents.
I want to be there to see them off.

The reason has been forgotten. But the hands still remember.
