We’ve spent years being told that players like Zverev, Medvedev, Sabalenka, Coco and others must be “professional” at all times.

Break a racket? Drama.
Show emotion? Unprofessional.
Say the wrong thing? Destroy their character.
Lose your temper? The media goes mad.

But then the US Open final ends and the commentary feed closes with:

“Get healthy Carlos and Jannik.”
“Please.”

Seriously?

Fans are allowed to dislike players. Fans are allowed to love whoever they want. That’s sport.

But commentators are different. You’re speaking to millions of people. Your job is to inform and comment on the match… not turn the feed into a fan account and casually take a swipe at the player who has just won the tournament.

And the timing makes it even worse. You could say “get healthy Carlos and Jannik” after any match, at any time.

But you chose to say it at the moment Zverev won the final.

That isn’t neutrality. That’s personal opinion being slipped into a professional broadcast.

And this is exactly why I keep talking about double standards in tennis.

If players are expected to behave professionally in front of millions, the people speaking to those millions should be held to the same standard.

The kind of complex thinking a pani puri vendor does daily is mind-blowing.

Take a simple evening at a stall. Six people standing, each on their 5th or 6th puri, some already demanding a second plate. Suddenly a new customer walks in. Most vendors don’t say, “Wait.” They just weave the person seamlessly into the cycle.

Now imagine the mental math:

Remembering who is at which puri.

Keeping track of whose turn is next.

Managing fresh plates, second plates, and shared plates; all together.

Customizing taste (extra teekha, more meetha, no aloo, jain, swaminarayan).

Balancing chutneys, potatoes, and flavored water so nothing runs out mid-cycle.

Handling payments; immediate, delayed, or credit.

Running logistics: how many plates to sell to survive the day?

And this is just the basic complexity.

All of it is happening in real time, with no Excel sheet, no CRM, no team, no reminder app. One mistake, and the customer knows instantly.

Now compare that with our white-collar world. We call ourselves multitaskers but lean on reminders, tools, meetings, and buffers. A pani puri vendor doesn’t get that luxury. For him or her, complexity is not a skill on the CV; it’s survival.

The next time you eat pani puri, notice not just the taste but the brilliance of the brain behind it.

Seems the Centre is misjudging the public mood right now. Why else introduce a fee on UPI and make things worse for your own standing?

Sure, running UPI costs money, no one expects it to be entirely free. But the cash-heavy system we had before cost significantly more. In reality, UPI saves the govt far more money than it takes to maintain.

Think of it like this: You used to pay ₹1,500 a month to ride a crowded bus. Then you switched to the metro, which costs only ₹800 a month. Instead of being happy that you're saving ₹700 every month and getting a better ride, you start complaining about spending ₹800. That’s exactly what’s happening here. The govt is complaining about the visible maintenance cost of UPI while completely ignoring the massive savings and value it has gained.

By shifting millions of transactions online, UPI reduced tax evasion, boosted compliance, and expanded the formal economy. It slashed cash-handling costs like printing, transport, and security, while ensuring cleaner, leak-proof welfare payouts. Its digital trail suppresses black money and fraud.

So why ruin one of the most successful systems India has ever built? The claim that merchants will absorb the cost instead of consumers is absurd. There isn't a single fee or tax levied on businesses in India that doesn't ultimately get passed down to the buyer. A 0.4% fee, even capped at ₹300 per transaction, will simply be tacked onto consumer bills, driving people right back to using cash.
